Duncan Patrick has been voted the meanest CEO for a couple years in a row. I wonder how bad you have to be to get that calling? Anyway, the only way to get his board members of his back is to find someone to boost his image. And who better than a kindergarten teacher? Annie would do anything to save her brother even if it meant playing a part of Duncan's devoted girlfriend. But the biggest problem is when the acting becomes reality and she starts falling for Duncan. Beneath that Scrooge mask there's a generous man. Duncan is leery of women and relationships. His ex-wife did quite a number on him. But Annie is just so good and giving that he simply can't resist her. From the beginning he treated her with respect. He did doubt her a time or two, but he was never intentionally mean and for once there was no mention of revenge of any kind. I love the stories in which the hero is grouchy, but you see him melt and become more human as the story progresses. Duncan, with some help from Annie, came to realize that shutting himself of, and being mean and a dictator isn't always the best solution. I do realize that the middle of July isn't the time of the year best suited for a Christmas themed book, but you won't be sorry if you do read it. Rating: 5 stars
Wow, what a book. I had this book for a few months and, after seeing the author on a documentary about the Holocaust, bumped the book to the top of my To Read pile. This work discusses the Nazi holocaust (the historical event) and how the Holocaust (capital H) was created after Arab-Israeli War in 1967. Finkelstein describes how organizations representing victims of Nazi brutality use tactics similar to those the Nazis used to get money from businesses, countries, and other groups that have any connection to Nazi Germany. I don't think a Gentile could have written this book without having a death warrant placed on him. While I try to keep an open mind about anything and might not believe everything Finkelstein used as examples, I feel that if even half of what is in the book is true, that it's very, very sad. The survivors and their descendants deserve the return of what was taken from them, but it should be their decision on what to do with any compensation, not groups who fought on their behalf in the courts but then use the settlement to pay for things in Israel or to fund some project of the group. This is a fairly short book (and small, maybe 7" x 5"), and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Nazi holocaust, the Holocaust (the created, emotionally-charged "ideological representation" of the historical event), or any type of social justice should read it.
I gained a lot from this book although it's really redundant. An interesting scientific look into luck, and it all boils down to attitude! So our moms were right all along......
Reading about HCB's experiences and philosophies from the man himself was, of course, interesting. As a small compilation of miscellaneous thoughts, it's a good read. But those who want to get a peek into his mind (no pun intended) I think will find it a bit too short. I'm still on a lookout for the Decisive Moment, if anyone knows where I can find an english copy that won't cost me one million dollars.
A book me and children really enjoyed. Have used it lots of times when doing skeletons

Yes, I bought into the popularity of Dan Brown's novels. I decided I'd take a leap and read something popular and "current." I am also always interested in historical fiction, or someone's idea of what could be historical fiction, as well as conspiracy theories. The Da Vinci Code was easy to read and difficult to put down. I very much enjoyed theplot and the writing style. I wish I could say the same for all of Brown's work.
Hmmm. This book, like The Flood, which I have also reviewed, is, as franchise-based books usually are, easy and not too mind-squeezing to read. It was somewhat pleasant (well, maybe pleasant isn't the right word) to read while in a Predator sort of mood, and you don't really have to think much, which is good at times. I will warn you that, while it was action-packed like The Flood, and while The Flood is certainly violent, Cold War is much more bloody and graphic. But it was easy reading, as before mentioned, and anyone who has seen the Predators on film will know what to expect: entertaining violent action. No contemplation here.

This started out with a bang, and I loved the premise. But then I found I didn't care so very much for the love story and what felt to be the required series of finial plot twists. Although I did like how it closed on intimations of coming discord.
