I thought this book was good overall. It deals with slavery, both legal and illegal, and a pirate who's made it his life's mission to free and help as many slaves recover as he can. The main character is the youngest child and only daughter in a family that runs a huge shipping business, and she gets involved with the pirate after he raids her ship. The romance didn't seem forced or rushed; the characters had great chemistry, and I believed that they'd fall for each other quickly. The villain was a bit of a caricature; his motive could have been believable, but instead it was turned into his being completely batshit insane, which weakened his motive, IMO. But I enjoyed it. Barry created an interesting science fiction setting with some fun variations on familiar themes, such as Nod, the overly helpful lightball robot. The smut wasn't too shabby, either. ;)

Cute and clever like most of Rosenthal's books. Too many puns to count. The chopsticks were my favorite supporting characters.

The most accessible psychodynamic reference manual currently in print. It provides the historical context of the most commonly seen diagnosis, confronts the shortcomings of the EVT movement, and promotes a conceptual framework that is sympathetic to the concept of overdetermination. My copy is already well worn.

Cute.
A great book by an amazing Asian American author. She transcribes her experiences onto the page in such a way that I personally empathize with her plights quite well.
The author creates beautiful scenes (she's a poet).

A young Chinese woman refused the insulting marriage proposal of an older, nasty tempered official. She makes the bold statement that she will not accept any man's hand in marriage unless he can best her in a sword fight. Naturally this results in all the young bucks in the area challenging her - and losing - including men sent by the decrepit old official. Until one day, a young and handsome man comes to town, and upon hearing of the sword fighting beauty while in a tavern, decides to seek her out. He wasn't informed however, that if he won, he won her hand in marriage. "You're good" he said. She parried and twisted his blade aside. "I don't need you to tell me." I absolutely loved the imagery and the story of Mei Lin. The time period was unusual, and the cultural nuances that the author included in the story made for fascinating reading. I'm looking forward to reading more by Jeannie Lin!

I read this in high school and remember loving it. I remember feeling that this was the first "grown up" book I read. I really want to re-read this to see if I still love it in the same way.
