Such a great book. I first read it in early middle school. Just read it again a couple months ago...mystery, fantasy, a touch of the scary, coming-of-age...awesome.

Mike Nelson was a writer and later on camera member of Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Or MST3K. It was a program that ran on Comedy Central in the 1990s. Check Wikipedia if you want to know more about it. Anyway, this book is a series of short, funny stories and anecdotes. It is very self deprecating with non of the superior attitude or mean-ness (is that a word?) you might find in Seinfeld's observational humor. Mike's Midwest roots shine in this book and it's especially funny if you know someone from or have visited Minnesota. I can't recommend it enough.

Hmmm...I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did. I read Sherwood's second novel first, "The Death & Life of Charlie St. Cloud" and had to remind myself NOT to compare this quirky novel to that one, as I can't say enough about the Charlie St. Cloud story!! Anyway, Wally Chubb decides to prove his love to a woman (Willa) by eating a 747 airplane that crash landed on his farm several years ago. Why Wally decides that doing this will finally gain Willa's attention after some 20 odd years of unrequited love, we do not know. I can't tell much more as I don't want to ruin the story for others who may read this after me. But, Sherwood's character J.J., draws you in with random 'Book of Records' facts and gives you plenty of detail about the oddballs he deals with and the towns people.

So this is, like, TOTALLY going to be the year that I finish all the books my book club is reading. I say this because this is book number 2 and I also finished book number 1. Wazzzzup. This is a memoir about life in and escaping from French penal colonies in French Guiana. Very interesting. However, as with many memoirs the memoirist's point of view gets in the way. Or maybe my awareness of the memoirist's point of view gets in the way. At any rate, I found myself thinking, "Really? Did everyone you meet, jailors included, come to the conclusion that you were a noble soul and that your repeated escape attempts were totally justified? Did local Indian tribes really embrace you and recognize your true self?" I'm just saying. Of course, I had none of these problems with the Keith Richards' autobiography (which I loved) even though he makes equally self-serving absurd comments. But I felt like I had more context to work with about Keith Richards before I read the book. So Keith alleges that Mick Jagger has a small penis. Is anyone who hasn't lived under a rock since the 60s surprised?

I was very excited to see this book, as it asks a lot of very important questions, looking at the implementation of technology in schools through concepts of power, politics, equality, social justice, etc. Selwyn challenges the tacit view that somehow digital technology lies in some rarified space outside of society, culture and politics and, with this neutrality, can be transformative of education. This is an important challenge, as digital technology is a cultural artefact, designed, developed, sold and implemented in particular sociocultural contexts, which reflect and recreate certain power dynamics. It is only in teasing those out into the open that the failure of the promise of digital technology in schools can start to be dealt with. Selwyn wants to tease out those dynamics in the "messy reality" of compulsory education within various contexts such as the lived experiences of teachers and pupils, policy making, school organizational concerns, public v private trends etc. He attempts to make the case that whatever the intentions of the those implementing digital technology in schools, in practice, the variety of power/political and social agendas stymie the potential. My only personal frustrations with the book is that he seems to think that these are the only reasons for the failure of technology implementations. Sometimes it can be (at least partly and not particularly sociologically interesting), bad implementation, bad project management, bad purchasing. I get the impression the schools and teachers can do no wrong. Even stranger for me (I've not read Selwyn before), is that he starts the book saying, "I'm not anti Tech. Honest Guv!" (not a direct quote!)He seems to have been criticised for being a Luddite. However, it is hard to see a positive view of technology in his book. It feels like his fundamental position is that most tech comes from private capital, which is only there for itself, embedding and recreating its own position. His only major positive view is around the use of open source, which in my opinion in weakly argued. (Will be interesting to hear other views).
