My boys were right: this is a funny book about an unusual boy. I think it would be a little better if Oggie were more conscious of his differences, but then he wouldn't be the same Oggie. Entertaining, with an undercurrent of "be yourself."

3 1/2 I enjoyed this book -, liked Thayer's close relationship with her paternal grandfather and her conflicted relationship with her dysfuctional mother. Set against a backdrop of fables, and Celtic tales, love lost and family relationships this book is a good southern read.

Kawabata is one of two Nobel literature prize winners from Japan. His works are often referred as having the essense of Japanese watercolor paintings. One can find roots of Japanese culture and asthetics in his writings.

I really enjoyed this YA mystery novel. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.
A beautifully woven family's story that has love, genetics, dictionary definitions, a bipolar disorder mother, and Lady Diana's wedding day in it. One of the best uses of the dictionary in fiction I've ever come across.
The Magic of Recluse introduces a very interesting world where there is "black" magic and "white" magic. The "black" magic deals with order (generally considered good) and the "white" magic deals with chaos (generally considered bad). There is an amazing consistency in the world described. The rules make sense and seem to be fixed. There is very little of the tendency of some fantasy writers to write there hero into a mess and then invent some outlandish new trick to get him out. The story involves a group of young people who are exiled from their home and must journey in a foreign land in order to find themselves. There are adventures as the people work out their place in the world and discover their powers. The main character, Lerris, is, unknown to himself, endowed with great potential to use magic. He must learn how and when to use his powers. The book is well written and the characters interesting. There is a moral tone (I have seen it described as pop psychology in a review) throughout the book that may put some people off. I found the book fun to read and well worth my time as a source of entertainment.

this was the book that got me hooked on t.c. boyle. . .i read it like 12 years ago when in peace corps and linked into the geographical divides he depicts so well in the book.
Oh this was delightful and heartbreaking and familiar. If you have had that special friend who seems to undercut your sense of self worth and good mental health, then read this...and of course, maybe say goodbye to that friend....
