I could relate to the character. It was a fun easy read and I loved it.

I anticipated this being nothing more than an angsty-teen-coming-of-age sort of novel, which it is, but I was actually kind of pleasantly surprised by the writing. The book is unsurprising on many levels -- insert angsty clever teen in rich school here, describe common stereotypes there, throw in common high school dilemmas -- but despite that the writing is fresh enough to keep your interest anyway.
We often read that joy is attained in the journey, not the destination. This book encapsulates that notion. The Happiness Hypothesis weaves the reader through different theories, myths and assumptions pulling together artefacts to a compelling conclusion. The best book I've read since "The Guide for the Perplexed". I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone seeking true happiness and meaning in their lives.

It's a lot to take on, but it's a fascinating biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the nuclear bomb. Quite a complicated character...I don't get the theoretical physics, but as a physicist friend just commented to me, "who does?"

This book would be interesting to anyone curious about the human mind. Other than gathering anecdotal information and getting a better feeling for all that the human mind has to do for us to accomplish all that we need to do everyday, this book is worth the read because the author is so blithely and caring-ly condescending. One could get angry at the author for this but he's so guileless it would be pointless and it ends up being more entertaining than anything else.

So very fun. Except, why does Toad get away with being a ruffian?
A nonfiction entry that will work well for both pleasure reading and classroom use. "Trees are the oldest, biggest, and tallest living organisms on earth" and this book covers 14 of the most unique trees on the planet. From Methuselah, a 4,800 year old Bristlecone Pine, to Hyperion, the tallest tree, Celebritrees features record holders and curiosities. The acrylic, colored pencil, and watercolor illustrations have a simplified folk vibe that works well with the earthy subject matter. -T I finally got around to picking this up this past month and really enjoyed it! The trees are varied and unique and cover several different parts of the world (although there is a definite focus on US trees--half the celebritrees can be found here). The record holders are described in a way that at least tries to make their size understandable to young readers (General Sherman, the world's biggest tree, is as heavy as 10 blue whales, or three 747 jets!) Additional information includes a bibliography and websites for further reading, and a page of tips for helping to grow more celebritrees. ~s

An entertaining companion to the Belgariad/Malloreon series. Belgarath is a wonderful character, and getting his first person perspective on 7000 years of history adds a certain level of good humored fun. There are certainly some errors and bits of retconning that don't line up with the original series, but it is only to be expected in something written over a decade later.

The book tells a good story but the real significance is not the action so much as the relationships between the characters, most specifically the strained relationship beteen the British and the natives of India. Nice comparisons of British vs. Indian perceptions and thought. Feels good to read.. much harshness in a person's manner is a result of complex misunderstandings and ignorances which are hard to sort through without assistance.. the book has enlightening social insights and I feel kinder for having read it.
