This was my least favorite of Jane Austen's and therefore, I've only read it once. It was difficult to get into and I didn't relate to any of the characters. Frankly, I found it boring.

This book is so much better than the last one, I get it.. the last one was set up. I am enjoying this one so much more and am sad the next one isn't already finished so I can keep on reading.

I heard the author read from this book at Grinnell College in Iowa. I bought it right away because I really liked Brian. It isn't the fastest read but it definitely is worth the time spent. I thought of it as the sort of book you have to suspend your sense of reality to enjoy. You can't question why things happen, or whether things seem real, you just accept it as part of the story and wait to see how it all comes out. Maybe A Miracle is a sensitive, witty, ironic and irreverent story sharing all the shades of a dysfunctional family's dignity and indignity. Monroe saves his sister from drowning on the night of his senior prom. His date had a hard time believing that he was serious about why he stood her up. The sister remains in a coma for 3 years while the mother makes her into a religious icon. The father drinks and Monroe tells the story and talks to his sister about baseball. The end is a little bit of a let down I look forward to another book by Brian Struase.

Wow! Thanks to Lauren Willig (The Pink Carnation series) for recommending this book! It has a mention of Claire, Jamie, and Ian from Diana G's Outlander series, which was such a treat! Picking up on some of the characters from "The Last of the Mohicans", this book furthers the tale of Dan'l Bonner and family. It centers on Dan'l's son, Nathaniel, the town of Paradise, and Judge Middleton's son, Julian, and daughter, Elizabeth. For me, this book was incredibly difficult to put down! I was captivated by the characters and the story. It reminded me of how I felt/still feel when I read/re-read the Outlander novels -- so caught up, I feel as if I've stepped through the pages and into the story as one of its characters. Can't wait to begin the next of the series!

Abelove's Go and Comeback is widely regarded as a YA classic and is not one of my favorites, so it was with a wary heart I began this one, only to quickly realize I should not have been thus prejudiced. The two novels could not be more different. Saying it Out Loud is set in the 1960s when the heroine, Mindy is 16. Mindy's mother is dying from a cancerous brain tumor. This is one of those books that Kenny reads the jacket and then says, "why are you reading this?". Indeed, sometimes I wonder the same things since I often find these types of books, particularly those aimed at youth, lacking in emotionally currency. Not so with this one. Abelove's treatment of the complexities of grief at an already complex age are as emotionally dead on (pardon the pun) as I have ever read. The writing, though not complex, is eloquent and achingly poignant while still having the voice of a sixteen year old girl. I love the opening paragraph, "When I was little, I thought that people died when they used up all their words. I thought everyone was born with a certain number of words and when they used them up, it was time for them to die. Not everyone was born with the same number. That would be too easy..." This is a short book and while the material is weighty, the words themselves are not difficult, so it would be accessible to all. (I was distressed to see it had been assigned an AR level of 4.1). I would recommend this to many readers especially those who may have enjoyed the Lurlene McDaniel books and are looking for something similar.
