The novel is set in future Atlanta, a future where technology and magic work in mutually exclusive "waves". Shapeshifting abilities are from the Lyc-V virus. Vampires are people killed by a virus which allows necromancers to remotely "pilot" the body. The story aside, the world created by Andrews and her husband has a lot of depth and the differences from the "mainstream" make it all the more interesting. Kate Daniels is a Mercenary/ troubleshooter/ private investigator. Her guardian, Greg, has been killed and it is up to her to investigate and bring the killer to justice (i.e. kill them). I quite enjoyed the story. The story is interesting, the characters are relatable. Unfortunately, the series (and Kate Daniels) seems like an imitation of the Anita Blake series (pre-Narcissus in Chains). If I had never read the Anita Blake series I would have given this a 5 but in comparison I feel it only deserves a 4.5 stars.

Wasnt as good as the first one but was a good book
This is a great book, my first of Dickens! You don't just read a nice story here, you enter a rich and, oftentimes, brutal world with unique characters only Dickens could have created from all different social classes. And it's the only book I've read that includes a gruesome depiction of spontaneous human combustion! As much as it describes the worst of humanity, it also describes the very best with its kind-hearted, orphan heroine Esther Summerson. I highly recommend it!
I haven't finished it and I can't find it. :(
"La luna, como una gardenia en la solapa de la noche...". Este libro es amor, ¡léanlo!

The characters here seem hopeful in the beginning, ready to find success in the American West as well as their own lives at the end of the 19th century. Stegner captures the slow seep of hope away from them in a way that's probably realistic for many who start out life with plans and time, but watch them both fall away. At nearly 600 pages, it still feels a little unfinished and maybe a little unsatisfying. I found the narrator and his grandmother to be just a little annoying at times, but it made them real in a way too. It was an engrossing read that captures the dusty sagebrush wandering of a pioneer family that doesn't conform to any sterotypes I might have had about such a group.

It was one of the best books I have read. It has it all, love, tears, family, and adventure. Highly recommend!
This book took me a really long time to get into. The first part, to me, was confusing and way too much info at once. However, because I was reading it for my book club, I kept on, and it got much better. I am so glad that I finished it because I really feel that I learned a lot from it. So much discussion about Iranian culture - it was really eye opening. In addition, it helped me to look at literature just a little bit differently when anazlying it. All in all, definitely worth reading. The best book ever? Definitely not, but get through the first section, and you'll really enjoy the rest!

Don't take my word for it: Bob Dylan; Jim Morrison; Janis Joplin; David Bowie; Hunter Thompson and Ken Kesey (to name just a few) have all proclaimed Kerouac's novel a life-altering read. Check it out.
Alright, I've read it now. And I thoroughly enjoyed it. I feel that Nicole Krauss actually has a better grasp of children and adolescents than does Jonathan Safran Foer, evident in that Alma was a much more realistic portrayal than Foer's child in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. And in many ways, I feel she writes with greater skill about interpersonal relationships and understanding. I was particularly struck by a passage in which one young man who fancies himself a writer reads the book written by his closest friend. Before reading the book, he had thought that the two of them were alike-- two young men who played at being writers, who shared similar talents, similar thoughts, similar feelings. Upon reading the book, he suddenly discovers how false that sense of sameness had been. He is struck by the genius of his friend's words, his emotional response is less jealousy, less shame at has own inferior talent, and more awe of the vast differences between the two of them that he never knew existed before. I had to call a friend of mine and read this passage to him after I read it, and I went on to recommend it to one of my professors. In this moment, I felt no desire to "explore the differences between Krauss and Foer". I didn't need to think about who had written this passage, only to think that it was wonderful, that I was glad I'd happened across it.
