Delicious. For those of us who are utterly tired of the severity that surrounds religion and the greatest "story" ever told. This book would be a delightful edition to the bible. Finally a chapter that's an upper!

★★★★ I was always under the impression that this was a great love story... boy was I wrong! It is a tragic story of love. All the characters are driven mad by the emotion that is suppose to compel them to be better people. Very dark, uncomfortable read. Miss Brontë is no Miss Austen.

I got this book when it first came out in 2004, but never got around to reading it (like dozens of other books on my shelf). I'm bringing it with me to Paris for our one year anniversary trip. Very, very good at times then petered out. I didn't even finish it.

Interesting story that was poorly executed. These women were amazing, but it was hard to keep up with who was shipwrecked, who was attacked, and who was interned in Hong Kong. I think it could have been better told.

Instead of giving a synopsis, I'll give you a little history behind this novel. The author, Takami, submitted it to a First Novel competition which was overseen by a panel of judges who are renowned literary figures of Japan. It was slammed by the entire panel as written by a perverted mind, someone who was really disturbed, & they voiced their opinion to the public. With this infamy, the book was published by a small press & it quickly gained a cult status with the youth culture--making a massive clamoring by film companies to turn it into a film which became a very controversial subject among parents who wanted the film banned. The filmmaker passionately defended the film & the novel, challenging the parents, government & PTA to view the film with open minds to see for themselves what the film's subject was & it's meaning. They did, giving it a standing ovation & reversed their decision to ban it. The film & novel became a cult sensation here in the U.S.--touching off many imitators (HUNGER GAMES anyone?)--with a lot of people missing the message much like they did with A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (but that's another discussion). I found the novel to be very entertaining & written in a very sophomoric prose--but regardless, it does make one think about how far reality television, the government & society can push past the boundaries of sanity. Yes, it's gory. Yes, it makes you want to see who survives the deadly game the students are subjected to against their wills. Yes, it shows you how friend will turn against friend in order to win the game. I would say it is not a waste of time but there are better books to read. One thing I do have to say is: The manga adaptation is garbage & takes exploitation to new heights. I'm not a fan of graphic novels depicting rape as a form of forced-submission by law enforcement officials & the manga does it with sickening visuals. While the novel merely hints at it, the manga reveals it with full two page spreads & almost revels in it--not for those with weak stomachs. Nevertheless, the manga does go far deeper into the backgrounds of the characters than the novel or the film--so much is revealed about them, the game of death takes a backseat. Read the book instead.

A nice return to Green Town. This book has a different feel than Dandelion Wine, perhaps because Bradbury was decades older between the release of the two books. Douglas, too, is older and is having trouble navigating between the worlds of children and adults. He finds he is being usurped as the leader of the gang by his younger brother Tom, all the while resisting growing older and learning about the cycles of life.

this book talks about the second world war. It is about this boy named Bruno. He and his family had to move from berlin to the countryside. from his little bed window he spotted people behind a fence in striped pijamas. These were jews. These people were held in the nazi concentration camp.one day bruno goes outside to his house and into the woods to Emplore. he meeta a jew boy called Shmuel. they became really good friends so every day brunoo goes with him to talk. one day Shmuel couldnt find his father so as the book finifhes as a final adventure Bruno Dresses up in stripped pyjamas and climbs the fence to help Shmuel find his father. Bruno was going back home to berlin bot he went and help his frien and when he decided to go back to his house the Nazi soldiers put the boys to march. Neither of them new what was going on but soon they were crowded in the gas chamber. So bruno and Shmuel die holding hands and when his father knows he died at the gas chamber 1 year later he doesnt care what happens to him when the red army ariives.
