As soon as I saw that this book was a buck and change long, I snapped up Orwell on the spot! Those pigs were fucking bastards! I always felt sorry for the horse. And the sheep just fucking annoyed me to no end. Kinda fucked up for a children's story, don't you think?
What this book lacks in structure it makes up for in vulgar language. It started off strong, funny and likeable but then it felt like she ran out of things to say so she started padding it out to make it to 300 pages but she still didn’t get there so she padded some more and still didn’t get there so then she added the whole Palin script which got her to 270 pages where she decided to call it a day.
Fascinating, well-written book that divides human history into six eras - Beer, Wine, Liquor, Coffee, Tea, and Cola (specifically of the Coca kind). Standage lets the story unfold almost like a novel, with fresh, witty observations showing up next to enthralling facts and history. The book really does showcase how essential these six beverages were to the development of society and human existence as we know it. Even better - he comes full circle and hypothesizes that water is and will be the next huge drink that changes the course of history. One of the best books I've read in the past year, if not my life.
It's just a good book! Read it!
Usually in mystery novels where every law keeping agency known to man is involved, I lose track of the characters. This did not happen this time. I was able to separate FBI, Internal Affairs and police jurisdiction figures (and the criminals). It must be that Michael Connelly was able to impart recognizable personalities to each character. I am a “series purist”. I am compelled to read in order. Thus, because of a recent recommendation for a Harry Bosch novel, I had to start at the beginning before getting to the recommended one. Interestingly, Harry’s past cases and past partners are often mentioned, giving the reader the impression of being dropped into a sequel, even though this is our first introduction. Like all of our acquaintances, we may never know everything about Harry. No excuses are given for his “hard-boiled” behavior, and it would not occur to him to present any. Harry is Harry. You should meet him.
good book. i think a bit overrated, but it was an easy/quick read. it's referenced a lot, so i think good for people (especially those involved w/ business) to read.
