I found the small parts of the book that actually addressed the bonobos and their incredible human ways, quite fascinating. However, those parts were few and far between. If this book even gave the bonobos 1/4 of the storyline, it could have been a very good book. Instead, the book took quite the turn by introducing us to characters, some that had absolutely no reason to be in this book.... the lap dancer who stole a condom from her client, and then bought a turkey baster to get pregnant - where did that come from? and where was it going? The book contained many other ridiculous storylines, and references to reality TV stars, which I found to be quite distracting. Although most of the characters had nothing to do with each other, the ending somehow bunched them all up to give us a tidy, but unrealistic, predictable ending.

I didn't hate this the way most of my friends led me to believe that I would. In fact, I rather liked it. It's a flawed novel, yes, but it's a quick and engaging read. I can see why it's done so well.

I've had this book for years (a present from a friend). It's set up as little quips and stories, the longest of which are two pages. Possibly three. So I'd read 20-30 of them, laugh, put the book down, come back to it a bit later and repeat.

some interesting language theory, but analyzing the progression of prepositions on page _ lines _-_ is not as interesting to me as the end effect. so from someone who is not super interested in language theory: parts of it are really interesting
Probably more of a 3.5 I guess it's the year of books written from strange perspectives. I've read a book written in the voice of a dog and now a 5 year old boy. This was definitely a unique read. I've never read anything quite like it. I found the book very interesting and I soon got used to reading the strange narrative where objects are treated like friends, ie. Lamp and Meltedly Fork. There are a few things I really liked and disliked about the book: Dislikes: - I felt the pace of the book was pretty slow at first. I was starting to lose interest a little and then suddenly they need to escape and right now. You blink your eye and they're out. --With Jack's immature perspective, I felt a lot of ideas were touched on but never explored in depth. He hears bits of adult conversations but we never get to see the issues play out or learn how they really effect the adults around him. - I thought the constant discussions of breast milk was a little annoying. And I nursed for a year so it's not that I'm anti-nursing. - I think Jack's separation from Ma would have been much more traumatic than Emma depicted. It seemed like one day he couldn't leave her for a second and then it was just okay that she wasn't there. - I would have liked to read more about what Ma was dealing with, but with the books voice I understand why that was not possible. Likes: - just reading something totally different was nice. She is constantly showing you what Jack is feeling and thinking. - I liked how she was able to write about such a horrific subject without it being depressing. - I liked how contrast in how Ma and Jack felt about the room vs. the Outside. Each viewed a different place as safety. - I like that it is a book that deals with the aftermath of their escape rather than just ending at their escape. I think that reintegrating into society is a very intriguing subject. Overall I think this is a good book. I think that the child voice of the narrator adds to the unique story, but at the same time limits the depth the book can have in dealing with the complex psychological issues at hand.

Interesting graphic novel that I read for Reader's Advisory-a story set in Victorian England with super heroes. This novel has a lot of interesting artwork, and although the super-hero storyline generally does not intrigue me, the setting and the artwork was good. Adjectives to describe this book: complex, dark, great artwork.

Pym is a favorite drug. Every few years I go on a bender and re-read a bunch of her books. This one I picked up after reading One Fine Day by Mollie Panter-Downes. It was not One Fine Book, but reminded me of Pym in the setting and the cast--so I had to get the taste of it out of my brain with the real Pym. Success. Never was there a lighter, defter touch than Pym's. She was a master of dark, gentle, comic irony. Her writing looks simple--but it isn't. Why aren't there movies of her books?

Really good book. So envious of their relationship and touched by all of their stories.

We all know the movie, but the book surpasses its cheesy 80's film counterpart by leaps and bounds. It is still the same story of the outcast Bastion that we know and love, equipped fully with Falcor and the child-like Empress and rock-eating creatures of that world. But it has about 3 times as many events, details, and characters and they are all fabulous. However, you still don't find out her flip-floppin' name!!
