I read this book when I moved to Brixton. It is about a group of friends that just hang out in South London . As the books describes 'it is a time when 'you do not form friendships, but are formed by them.' A lovely book that describes Brixton in the late 80's perfectly. Geoff Dyer, a local man himself, writes so perceptively about friendships. If you liked this one you'll like Paris Trance too.

3.5/5 stars I have to admit I'm not giving this book more stars because of my own personal style preference. I really did enjoy the story. I loved the underlying sweet theme of true love among a dark and troubled life. The language bothered me. There is plenty of it, including the Lord's name in vain and the "F" bomb in abundance. But I guess if your life was like Janie's, it would be full of that kind of language. The style of writing was very distracting for me - again, just a personal preference. The sentence fragments really started to annoy me after a while. But again, it was a good style for Janie's personality.

This book series is a fun and pretty quick read with lots of gorgeous mixed media illustrations and an interractive twist allowing you to open someone else's mail and essentially be a voyer to the unfolding of a fascinating romance and mystery. The illustrations are also done by the author, Nick Bantock.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why I did not enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. It is satirical, witty, and ironic but it just never grabbed me. In the end, I think it was the writing style. It was not smooth. I had to read several pages twice and when I went back I realized I had missed really important details that should have been climactic. This book did not mesh with my brain, which is a shame because I love the premise. It is about a botched Armageddon where good and evil and all the archetypes in between are anthropomorphized into flawed and comical characters. I particularly enjoyed the personification of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

I have no idea why this book came to mind, but it did. I remember the plot just well enough not to spoil it, and enough to remember how much I enjoyed it, even though at ten, I knew it wasn't terribly complex.

3.5. This isn't my favorite Barker collection, but still -- she has a style that's simple and crisp, but still tender. This collection is a bit more minimalist than her others, so I might still be getting used to that.

A great read for Catholics of my generation (and maybe other generations, too...) Makes you feel guilty when you laugh at it, just a little.... If you're Catholic, you'll understand!

This is such beautiful prose that it becomes poetry. Beautiful musings of order and chaos, minutiae and universal. This is the kind if book one reads for the love of thought and language. If only it weren't so short.
