This is the first book in the series that I have read. It's very good, but I didn't get that "I can't put this down!" feeling. It takes place in Moscow before the fall of the Berlin wall, so there are all sorts of cultural goodies.

A friend on our Russian tour recommended this book. As I began to read it--the first 10 pages, I realized that the whole book was about Frank Lloyd Wright's affair with Mamah Borthwick Cheney. Not believing that it would be profitable to continue reading it, I read the last chapter to see what happened and will return it to the library. Although it seems well-written, I do not recommend it due to the content.
Just ok. I expected this book to be much more exciting and along the lines of Harry Potter (OK, so sue me!!). It wasn't at all. There were a few funny moments, but overall, the book just seemed to drag for me.

The social satire is enjoyable (if a bit overkill), but it is in the exploration of dimensions where this book really shines.

A librarian is struck by lightning and loses her ability to see color, and then she meets a man who is all fire and red. I love Hoffman's magical realism!

I often feel bi-polar when I in the process of reading anything by Gaiman. I find myself thinking that I am reading the most bizarre book of my life, or the one that makes the most sense. Sense to the point that I am mystified as to why no one else had written something like it. In either case however, the writing is superb and this book is no exception. This was such a fun, original idea that I was destined to like it. Gaiman is one writer who manages, EVERY TIME, to make his subject macabre and funny at the same time. This takes talent (a lot folks), and once again the man has delivered. The YA tag on this one is pointless. The only YA part of this book is the age of the protag. Ignore the DOB on your driver's license and just read this one. It is too odd...you'll have to enjoy yourself out of self defense! :)

I've covered half the book. So far i've reestablished that americans are fat. Not entirely caused by fast food as an american staple, but because we dont do that recommended 10,000 steps...Especially in california, our asses drive everywhere. Need to go to the post office? drive there. Need to buy groceries? Drive there. Need to go to your neighbors house? I know your ass is going to drive there if its hot outside. In Japan, people walk or ride a bicycle; even if they have three bags of groceries. On the downside, being thin is a mental issue as well...but i'm pretty sure it's the same here too. I think the biggest thing i've picked up is they're philosophy on food. Food is art. Food is love. Food isn't just made, its created whether its gourmet or homecooked. Unlike the american culture, eating food is an art. They savor every bite and every taste. OH! and everything has its own small container: a soup bowl, rice bowl, sauce container, chopstick stand. Ergo, everything is portion controlled. And my last favorite is eating with chopsticks. I guess eating with chopsticks takes more concentration, so you're not rushing and i think you get full faster. i think the last half are mostly recipes.
