This novel is an odd love story with an undercurrent of social criticism. As a governess, Jane is rather limited in her options as an educated woman. She acquires the required refinements of the aristocracy, but she is still a hired hand. Her employment options are limited, as we find when she leaves Thornfield and by hearing Miss Ingram in the parlor. Jane is the archetype of morality throughout the story. There is rebellion within the story, but it is limited to Jane's early struggles to find a place in the world. "I was obliged to yield" (166). Though she is consistently wronged throughout her life, she maintains the ideal of Christian forgiveness. This is especially poignant after the valediction of Mrs. Reed, Jane forgives and, for reasons that surpass understanding, asks for forgiveness yelling at Mrs. Reed. The novel is not all dour. The humor within the text is either ironic or dry to the point of dissection, but does it rear its head from time to time. There are not many positive male characters, although the carriage driver (who is in the text for a sentence or two) is portrayed in a positive light. When Rochester tells the tale of his marriage, it is difficult to put a lot of faith in the story. His actions are so eratic and, apparently, he loves playing games. At various points, you have to ask does he love Jane or the idea of Jane--impossible to anwer that question.

This was a fun read that is probably for young adults, but is great mind candy when you don't feel like a heavy read. It's addictive and entertaining. I didn't plan to be on the Stephenie Meyer bandwagon, but I am enjoying the ride.

It would probably surprise some people to know that this odd little adventure novel is included on lists of "forbidden books" among occult groups, or that, along with "Nightmare Alley," it inspired some of the early lights in the Church of Satan. My guess is that it is only "forbidden" because certain elements of the occult world don't want you to realize how much of their shtick is stolen lock, stock, and barrel from pulp fiction. The story concerns an Indiana Jones-type adventurer who is kidnapped (from the "Adventurers' Club," no less!) by an evil mastermind who calls himself Satan. Satan promises him opportunities for pleasure, wealth, and adventure in return for working for him. Specifically, he wants to hire him for a small heist at an antiquities museum, but he'd also like to add our hero to his permanent staff of Highly Competent and Interesting People. The hero decides to stick around, intrigued by Satan and also by one of his female assistants. He learns about the drug Kehft, which Satan uses to control some of his less loyal minions. It takes them into a world of their own dreams, wherein they rule as kings and queens, while in reality their minds and bodies wither from neglect and addiction. He also learns of the odd form of gambling Satan like to subject his followers to, wherein they climb a staircase with supposedly-random footprint lights. If a white light is lit, they gain boons from Satan, but if a black one, they must submit to a period of unpaid service, up to their entire lives when three black footprints appear. Naturally, our hero plays for the girl, and loses a year of freedom. The story is engaging and interesting, and the character of Satan is especially well-written, and raises some interesting questions. Is he a con man or is he truly the Devil incarnate? Would there be a difference? What would that be? My edition of the book is illustrated with pictures from the silent movie version, which actually detracts somewhat, because the filmmakers evidently decided it was a comedy, and used a blond-Harold-Lloyd-type (including thick horn-rimmed glasses) to play the hero. Try to find an unillustrated edition.

Bought this and am re-reading it again! As good as I remember it!! ******Let me say first, I have never liked a sci fi book (I read "2001" aftwards, so it doesn't count). BUT THIS BOOK completely changed my mind and now I at least don't make fun of the genre so much. The climax of this book left me in tears from shock. A reader pours so much emotion in this book, it is one of those you pick up and finish the same day!

A delightful story of technology being adapted to recognize witches who are maybe wandering in the world without any training to control or discipline for their budding powers. This story is like others that Debora Geary has written about Witches that just sings with the sense of love and family. If only the real world had such positive views of how life can be, how much better off the world might be. This story centers on a Witch who always felt she didn't have any powers and longed to be like other children being raised in her community. Only when special programming and research was done by the techno whizzes was their tools able to recognize someone who could draw power from the internet. This left out Witch wasn't too happy with her power until she was able to "Save the Day" using her newly identified power. Just love Debora's stories, it is nice to read with a smile on your face. Treat yourself to a great read!

Coelho managed to put a lot of thought-provoking material in a very slim book. This read is about a woman who fails at committing suicide and how she finds herself, her awareness, and her foundations while housed in a mental facility being used as an "experiment" of sorts. It's engrossing and endearing without being morbid considering the subject.
