I actually liked Spook, although I do think that it was not as good as Stiff (Mary Roach's first book.) It dragged a little in the middle, but I was really pulled in by the ectoplasm discussion.

Everything is contained in the moment and you are the Time-Being. You do not aquire enlightenment, you simply discover that you always were enlightened. Like any jovial god entertaining itself, thou art that which is, you have only forgotten. Oh! The dramatic painfulness of laboring within an illusion Sleeping on a hillside Warm grass Arms of the earth hold me Empty mind

Dracula, academics, and a quest for sources that spans Turkey, Eastern Europe, and hundreds of years---if only all research trips could be this intriguing! A fantastic read.
Profiles, trend pieces, and slices of life from the boom years of the late 1990s. It was probably more interesting to read this book now than it would've been when it came out - it freezes in time the internet boom and the country's pre-September 11 giddiness.
This is probably one of those books that some people like very much and others dislike with equal feeling... Personally, I got a lot out of it. I saw many paralells between events in Castenada's story and some in my own life and that of my sisters. I think that if one can find something to relate to in this book, it will be meaningful and worthwhile to read; however, if one cannot relate to it at all, I suppose it would be rather tedious and even irritating. Sometimes Castenada's character in the story seems extremely ignorant and childish... but there are reasons for this, such as the need to relate the tale in a sort of dialogue form. At times I think his conversations with Don Jaun seem like they are between two different parts of himself. I really loved this book.
