I say that like it happens in my life all the time. I don't remember which I did first, read the book and watch the movie. But now I can only see Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood when I read the book. That's okay by me. They are two classic artists in their trade. PS: if I love a book, you will rarely see me check 5 starts, simply because I hate the word "amazing".

I couldn't put down this engrossing biography of George Steer, who seems to have had a knack for being in the most interesting places at the most interesting times. Steer was one of the first to report that German planes were present at the bombing of Guernica; he was heavily involved in Ethiopia and close with Haile Selassie; he covered the Finnish resistance in World War II; and he pioneered the use of propoganda in open conflict. This biography was so well-written that I actually cried when I read of Steer's premature death.

This book surprised me in so many ways. I love it when an author draws me into his or her story and makes me FEEL so much. It's a rare thing, but it happened for me with Okay For Now. I laughed and I cried. I stayed up late and went to bed with sweet tears in my eyes. This is one of those books where you want to hug the main character and say thanks to the author for writing such a terrific novel. This is Doug's story. He is a middle school student who moves to a new town with his family. He has a pretty crappy home life, with a father and an older brother who are bullies, another brother who is serving in Vietnam, and a mom who is sweet but stands up to no one. He has no friends, and his teachers and other adults believe he's a loser because he looks like one. Then, things slowly start to change. Doug makes a friend, adults and teachers start to see him for who he really is, and he is given a chance to be something more. I loved Doug's story. He starts by believing nothing good will come to him because that's the way it has always been. But then I felt joy at his surprise when good things really did happen to him. Like when he learned he could draw. And when he started to feel like he was worthy. Even though he was often put down, Doug was also never afraid to fight back. I applauded his courage, especially standing up to the coach, who was mean just for the sake of it. And I loved his willingness to believe that others may also be more than what THEY seem. I was especially drawn in by the way Doug interjects his thoughts to the reader into the narration: "I was smiling like all get-out. If you were paying attention back there, you'd know why." Doug, I was paying attention, and I did know why. And I had tears in my eyes because of it, too. This was a beautiful book, one of the best I have read in a long time. Don't let the fact that it's a young adult novel throw you off. Although I got this from the library, I plan on buying my own copy to read again. It was just that good.
Actually gave up about two chapters in. Definitely not my cup of tea. Way too much expository dialog. Characters were very dry.

I was really drawn to this graphic novel by the illustration on the front. I think I may have enjoyed it more if I had been more familiar with Deitch's other work. As it was - the story didn't do that much for me - but I really admired the illustrator's style.

Wow. Once in awhile a book leaves you speechless. This book will assuredly become a movie, but no film will capture any more vividly the horrors that Louis Zamperini endured than the author herself. "Seabiscuit" was a beautifully written, moving and engrossing book. "Unbroken" is gripping, powerful and IMPORTANT. A must-read! Uplifting tribute to the human spirit and the hand of God.

Okay, so this was an interesting book but I'm not sure I "got" it. Would probably read it again to see if I could "get" it the second time around.

I was cleaning out my bookcase earlier and came across A House-Boat on the Styx, by John Kendrick Bangs, which was published in 1895. It's a very interesting book. The book starts off with Charon paddling down the river Styx, smugly thinking to himself about how he has a monopoly on boats there, when he suddenly spots the houseboat for the first time. At first he's upset, thinking that it's a competitor, but it turns out to be a clubhouse. The characters in the book are all famous figures from history, literature and mythology - Sir Walter Raleigh, Cassius, Shakespeare, Homer, Demosthenes, Moses and Confucius are just some of the people who appear. The conversations between them are my favorite part of the books. Some chapter titles are "Washington Gives a Dinner," "Hamlet Makes a Suggestion," and "A Disputed Authorship," which should give you an idea. The house boat soon becomes the most exclusive clique in the Underworld. In the sequel, Pursuit of the House-Boat, Captain Kidd is denied membership and decides to steal the boat for himself. He isn't the only one unhappy with the boat's exclusionary policies, since it doesn't allow women to join, either. Kidd happens to pick a day when several curious women, including Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth and Mrs. Noah, snuck onboard earlier. Some of the men are distraught at the loss of the women, others are visibly relieved. They enlist the help of a certain fictional detective in tracking the boat down, but the women are more than a match for their captors.
