This book is policy heavy but still very accessible for the average reader who is not a policy wonk. Romney comes across as a global thinker but I was very concerned by his defense of the No Child Left Behind federal education law - as a former governor I would have hoped his world view would have been more focused on letting the 50 state governments serve on the "laboratories of democracy" not merely federal agencies charged with implementing this law. A strong call for universal school choice would have been encouraging.

I enjoyed this book. It reminded me of like a horror version of Da Vinci Code. It was the same kind of concept except it was centered around Dracula. I'd give it a 3 1/2 not quite a 4.

Mariama Ba's story unapologetically places the most stubbornly avoided “elephant in the corner” in the center and yet does not unfairly demonize men or excessively exalt women. An especially good pick for a bookclub.

Brilliant. It takes a while to get going but what else would you expect from a 500+ page novel? Brilliantly realised, his description is truly unforgettable and his characters beautifully drawn. The links between past and present are so clever that despite the challenging subject matter they can't help but raise a wry smile. Faulks at his best in my opinion.
