While the topic of Nazi Germany would usually strike at my heartstrings and captivate me, I was severely disappointed with this book. The writing style was so choppy and awkward, it didn't really paint clear pictures for me. And it was about 5 times too LONG, and BORING. The last 5% of the book should've been how 75% of the book was written (with some kind of action happening). It was so painful to read for 400 pages of nothing really happening, and barely learning anything about WWII. I'd hoped at least if the story was about a young girl during the time, that there'd be more historical information thrown in, to at least educate the readers about that point of history.

Beautiful story of a girl looking down on her family after her death. Will draw you in so that you can't put it down.

Definitely compelling than Sobel's later work, Galileo's Daughter, but still an interesting read, this small book gives the history of the European quest for a way to accurately and easily measure longitude at sea; a quest which was nearly given up as hopeless before turning into a race between astronomers and clockmakers to see whose method could be perfected and tested first.

Very poignant, and made me think about how everyone lies to themselves at some point. I am most guilty myself. We all have mis-conceptions about the world and the people we think we know. I could sympathise with trixie, but also have now seen how I have changed from my mother's perspective, so can empathise with her. I think this book has changed me more than any other.
Re-reading 2012.

Picked this one up a few years ago because I had heard such great things about the musical, but DO NOT recommend it to anyone. Way too much language and sex. I read the first couple chapters but disliked it so much (not only was it dirty, it was BORING) that I returned it to the library. Not worth the time.
3.5 / 5 ¿Tanto alboroto por esto? Ok. Reseña: http://www.eternamenteentiniebla.com/...

Listening on audio CD when we drive somewhere; Gerritsen can be overly dramatic and repetitive but once you get involved in the story, you have to keep listening to the end. My husband says she is a "womans writer". I don't like too much soap-opera kind of description: Does he notice me? Am I too low in society for her? But Tess is a pathologist so there is a lot of blood and gore, death and dismemberment (literally) and grave robbing (bodies sold in medical schools for anatomy class). This part dates in mid-1800's when medicine was naive about bacteria and its spread and treatment - bleeding to remove disease still practiced. Oliver Wendell Holmes as a young student of medicine is included as a character and it caused me to look him up on the Net and find out he was a renown doctor who helped push medical practice into the modern age (ether, germs, sanitation). The other part of the story is in the present when a woman finds a skeleton buried in her back yard so she starts researching previous owners and so the old story develops from found letters. Lots of American history mixed with a serial killer, poverty, social class and medical practice.
