It was really good, for a translated work, but I prefer the original Middle English.

An authorized followup to Jack Vance's Dying Earth tale "The Eyes of the Overworld," Michael Shea's "A Quest for Simbilis" was quite an ambitious project for an (at the time) unproven author. Yet this is no mere Cudgel fan faction. While "Simbilis" lacks the polish of Shea's later works, a lot of his trademark themes are present and while Vance's world is the springboard for "Simbilis," a great deal of the wonders and nightmares one encounters in this book is pure Shea. This book can be taken as an alternative sequel (Vance later wrote his own Cudgel followup) to "Eyes of the Overworld" or as a stand-alone fantasy novel. Either way, its a fine read. UPDATE: Bumping this down just a tad on the re-read. Much of it still holds up, but it's not quite as inspired as Shea's later work.

I'll admit it, I became interested in Abrose's book based purely on my enjoyment of HBO's miniseries of good-looking men (the book made my to-read list back in 2001 or 2002, but I finally got around to reading after a refresher run of the series on the History channel...). But the miniseries wouldn't have been enough to keep my interest if the writing wasn't compelling, interesting, and touching. Ambrose intersperses tender and funny anecdotes with his descriptions of military procedures. Any writing that can keep *me* interested in military tactics and tales is a good read!
Please check out Electrifying Reviews for more reviews like this, plus giveaways, interviews, and more! The Book of Blood and Shadow caught my eye the moment I first discovered its existence. I wanted to get my hands on it so bad that when I finally got it, I started reading almost immediately. And while I had no idea what was in store, I was pleasantly surprised by the rich, thought-provoking story that I found. The Book of Blood and Shadow is about so many things, and it deals with so many important issues, such as love, loss, and faith. And Robin Wasserman doesn’t sugarcoat any of these topics either. The Book of Blood and Shadow is filled with emotion and depth, and I felt as if I was living in the world Wasserman wrote out, and that’s something you don’t get in every book. While it does deal with these emotional issues, The Book of Blood and Shadow also has a very unique side to it that is unlike anything I’ve read before. Nora and her friends are thrown into a chaotic mystery and then encounter mysterious societies, centuries old secrets, and a connection between each other that only their adventures could bring them. Robin Wasserman is a fantastic writer, and I was completely enamored while reading The Book of Blood and Shadow. Every detail is so vivid while not slowing the story down or breaking the excitement. One thing I did unfortunately notice was that for whatever reason, I just couldn’t keep my interest with The Book of Blood and Shadow. And not because it is bad—because it’s not—it’s just that for whatever reason, I had to make myself read it. Nora was a valiant and smart protagonist, but I did find myself getting annoyed with her a few times. All of the supporting—well, I can’t really say supporting since they all played such a big role—all of the other characters I should say, were extremely realistic and dimensional. The Book of Blood and Shadow is rich and vivid and emotional and is so many things. Though its pace isn’t lightning fast, it is still a book I would highly recommend. It’s one of those books that you read slowly, absorbing every little detail with pleasure.

** spoiler alert ** Choosing to round up to what should be 3.5 stars, I will say I enjoyed this sequel to SHANGHAI GIRLS, but not as much as I liked the first book. It's a good read if you enjoy historical fiction, Chinese culture and a story about a mother's love for her daughter. A bit thin at times, but it still had a story that kept the pages turning with a happy ending. You'll enjoy this book if you've enjoyed Lisa See's other novels for sure.

I read this newer Gordimer novel in one or two sittings-- breathtaking prose and a premise hooked me in immediately: the protagonist is the daughter of a rich South African tycoon who becomes involved with an immigrant from an unnamed Arab country. The story proceeds believably enough, but the ending is a tad contrived; more poetic than novelistic. Led me to read one of her earlier novels, Burger's Daughter, which is denser, technically more ambitious; some say that the long, difficult read isn't worth the trouble. I may have to agree.

It's a subject I've always been intrigued by, and this makes a very strong argument. I loved that it's written by a hard nosed detective, who I'm sure isn't prone to flights of fancy. I love that, if it's to be believed, in his past life he was an artist, which seemed pretty far afield of his daily life. I loved going through his investigation into the whole thing with him.
