Appears a simple novel but has incredible richness, depth, and devastation that will eat away at you after you turn the last page. I found the beginning a bit boring but as I kept reading, I began to realize how masterfully written this story is. Now I'm on a mission to read his other works!

It was a very dark and disturbing book. However, I feel that the end was not as strong as it should have been. I would recommend it to anyone who likes stephen king. Also anyone who loves violence will love it.

I know it's a classic. It may even be well-written, but I just hated the entire plot and could not get beyond that.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I certainly learned a lot and for that alone I would give it a 5, however, it does get preachy at times. Since I had to skim over parts that were getting over bearing, I give it a 4 star rating.
What it is with titles that make bold claims? (Harold Bloom's "Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human" comes to mind). That said, Stashower impresses me as a writer who can make a non-fiction book as suspenseful as any mystery yarn. I learned much about Poe (the book functions as a precise and concise biography on the author), and I can almost guarantee that the biggest Poe fan will pick up a few new facts. There feels like a bit of padding in its pages -- the Mary Rogers case peters out before the book is finished -- but I still would highly recommend it.

This book was good, but sad to me. Pushing the Indians off their land seems so wrong to me. The book was very informative, telling all about how the Indians had to move. A good read, but just sad to me.

A plucky girl who triumphs and finds happiness despite a trashy and morally gray upbringing.
