I actually hated this book! I have never seen the movie, but now I have no desire. It was simply a depressing, weird book.
It's a cute short story. Would have been a little more realistic in some parts if it was longer but overall sweet

This was the first Nick Hornby book I've read. I'd seen the film versions of High Fidelity and About a Boy, but that hardly counts. However, having seen those films and now reading one of his books, it is easy to see why the main character narrates to the audience. It is impossible to remove Hornby's voice from his writing. Even in this book, where the main character is a middle-aged woman, Hornby makes her believable, but his distinctive humor and manner of speaking shines through. It's not the easiest work to swallow once you reach the end, but it's nice to see that not everyone has the answers, and it can be a very difficult journey trying to find them.
** spoiler alert ** 2011 is my year to de-clutter and getting this book read is part of that effort. I don't remember buying it and have no idea how long it was sitting on the shelf, but wanted to give it a chance before donating it or keeping it if I loved it. Unfortunately, I didn't love it. I liked this book ok, but didn't think that the story was all that original. The title character, Kathryn, is awakened by an employee of her husband's airline, Robert, who tells her that her husband Jack's plane went down off the coast of Ireland. The story follows Kathryn and her daughter, Mattie, as they deal with the grief of losing a husband and father. Kathryn & Jack's history is explained in a serious of Kathryn's memories the go back to when they met and end with when he left for his last flight to London. Not too surprisingly, all is not as it seems with Jack and as Kathryn grieves, she begins to learn her husband's secrets. Her journey takes her to London where she learns of Jack's secret life. Throughout, Robert is Kathryn's constant companion.

I have read this book three times. It has an incredibly intricate and fascinating plot. It is SO good. Katherine Neville has written other books, including The Magic Circle, which is also good, but The Eight is mesmerizing.

Thoroughly enjoyed!! Thoroughly thrown for a loop!! Bizarre and even a smidgen creeped out!! That is how I can explain this one. Nice to have a book to do that to you every now and then.
I expected a dirge with Catch 22. I went in fully bracing myself for another "All Quiet on the Western Front." What I got was a genuinely humorous and witty look at World War II, the military and war-in-general. I won't lie, there were points in reading this that I wanted to throw this out the window. At times, this reads more like a 350 page series of character sketches, but by the end Heller won me over. In short, I have more than a mild, literary man crush on Yossarian.

Another book I loved because of its rich descriptions of an other historical era. I think about the young girl in this book all the time when I walk around Williamsburg.
Condensa en un texto magnífico la desesperación, el sufrimiento, la angustia y el dolor. Muy buena.
as the first novel by one of the 'league of gentlemen' i had very high expectations of this book, and i was not disappointed at all!! witty romp (and i really don't use that word lightly, it is very apt..) through victorian london. highly recommended!
