I'm a big fan of epics, so my first Isabel Allende read, Daughter of Fortune, was a natural choice. My mom read the paperback, sent it to my Grammy, and when I was visiting Minnesota in November, my Grammy gave it to me. Fitting. The scene is the nineteenth century (always promising) and our heroine, Eliza Sommers, is a girl without true family or place. She's adopted by some wealthy British colonists in Chile, though she herself is at least half Chilean, she's raised as a proper young British lady, albeit one raised abroad. The real action begins when Eliza falls in love with a selfish idealist revolutionary type, Joquain. Joquain stows away on a ship bound for California (we're in the throes of the gold rush here, people) and Eliza, disguised as a boy, sets out after him. She meets Tao, a Chinese doctor/herbalist, and he takes care of her on the long crossing and after, when they arrive in seedy and wild San Francisco. (Hookers! Crazy immigrants! Manifest destiny!) The best parts of this book occurred after Eliza and Tao get to California. I really like imaging how places must have been in the past, and because I currently live in the Bay area, Allende's imagined 1850's San Francisco and East Bay hills are fascinating. I wish I lived here 200 years ago. Except for the disease, bad food, never bathing, and seriously limited choices for women. Otherwise, hell yes. Unspoiled California wilderness, gun-toting outlaws, and yes, the sense of a truly epic life. A fun saga, well told.

This book had a lot of bad words in it. It says the f word many times, and I mostly skimmed it because it was a little too adult for me. This book is DEFINITELY not for people under the age of 13, 14, and maybe even 15.

Vampires, Witches, and Daemons are the three greatest things that go bump in the night. Drawn to this book because of the supernatural appeal and what looked to be an amazing and promising read I could not wait to get my hands on it! On a whole I enjoyed the start of the book and the way the plot was unfolding; a witch determined to change her spots and a sexy vampire with a secret agenda. Their love will become the catalyst for the start of a revolution [of sorts]. The first three hundred pages flew by and I was just as caught up in their whirlwind romance. The mystery surrounding the book and her connection to it and her parent’s unfortunate demise which was coupled with the budding romance of two unlikely companions was enthralling. But the number of holes and jumps in the plot were beginning to take their toll on me. By the time the book moves back to Madison it seemed to start taking large leaps and bounds while simultaneously jamming as much detail and additional plot points in as possible. I stopped reading with seventy pages left due to my agitation with the writer’s approach to the end of the book; at times I wondered if she had a word or page quota to max out. Too many random characters made an appearance without much rhyme or reason. At the end I was so upset we are left to wonder. Then, I discovered this is the first book in a trilogy; sucker punch. I will ultimiately read the second book because I have to know what the secret is but I doubt I will enjoy her writing style any more. Overall while I have some major disgust for certain aspects of the book I would recommend it. However, this is not for the leisure reader as it does get pretty in-depth and you have to become committed to finishing. The characters are somewhat lovable if not a little distant, and the plot makes more sense knowing that it is not a stand alone book. Pros: Decent Plot, Aged Old Concept, Sexy, Secretive, Possessive Vampire with a conscience, Supernatural/Fantasy/Paranormal draw. Cons: Jam Packing Ideas, Holes in the Story, Static and Underdeveloped Characters. Stars: 3.5

I like David McCullough's writing and that is what makes this book enjoyable. I did struggle to figure out what the book was 'about' for a long while. Simply, it's about Americans in Paris in the 1800's and the history of Paris during that time. In anyone else's hands, this would be a tiresome book. But, McCullough pulls it off well. An interesting read, especially if you are interested in middle to late 19th century artists and european history.

In this story Alice leaves Jack and goes on a trip to Finland to rescue Peter. After the last story Peter almost killed Alice so he fled the country. Now Alice and Ezra, the oldest brother, go off to find him. Peter has put himself on a suicide mission because he cannot be with Alice. This story gets more complex because of the addition of the Lycan speices. Still wanting Peter and Alice to finally get together, you can actually feel their pull to each other when reading the book. I finished this book in less then a week. Once you start you will not be able to put it down, you will be dying to know what happens next!
Amazing book, could not put it down.
