Read this one because I liked its predecessor (Deadfall) so much. Just like most movie sequels--lost a lot of punch along the way.

Buat saya gak sekeren buku2 om Tere yg sebelumnya... rada binun aja sama jalan ceritanya yg lompat2... trus lumayan khayal... berasa di negeri dongeng deh...hehe tapi masih banyak pelajaran yg bisa dipetik kok... so, still ok lah...

I'm not going to bore you with the same old criticisms of Philip Roth. His work most certainly errs on the side of the misogynistic, this novel in particular. I found the first half of the novel largely insufferable--long episodic passages followed by longer passages of ironic carnality--yet the prose is titillating in its salaciousness. Roth does, however, make up for the largely wasted beginning of the novel with some truly revelatory material near the end, most particularly in the last 100 pages. Whether or not plowing through the 350 preceding pages is worth the resulting epiphany is each individual reader's call.

I found this so called memoir a bit uncomfortable. I heard about the movie before I read the book, but unfortunately for me I wasn't paying much attention to the preview otherwise I would have passed. This book is about Augusten's life during his childhood through his teen years. His mom gave him up to live with her pyschiartrist and his family. Every character in this book had mental issues. I was uncomfortable reading his first sexual encounter was with a pedophile. I did find the author to be witty and I had my laugh out loud moments but the story as a whole was horrible and crazy enough that it had to be true because why would anyone make up stuff like this?
Historical accounts with a bit of intrigue . . .

I saw the Coen brothers version of this in 2010, and found out later it was based on the 60's Charles Portis book. The Coens adapted the book as opposed to remaking the John Wayne version, and you can tell by their faithful adaptation. I thought Hailee Steinfeld did a great job as Maddie, but thought her dialogue delivery was a little stilted. So imagine my surprise when I read the book and she really did the book justice with her diction--she sounded JUST like the book version, and Jeff Bridges was a great Rooster. Since I knew how the book ended, I was a little weary of it by the end and was ready for it to be finished--Portis's writing style got a little repetitive. It was fine, but I wasn't as enamored with it as others. 2.5 stars, but I'm rounding up based on my affection for the movie (which I'm thinking back on more positively after reading its source material).

read this on my flight from PHX to Philly today.. very much enjoyed it. Nouwen puts into words many of my deepest thoughts and at the end of this book, even perfectly hits on my fascination with the gift of dying well. ok. that might sound weird. but its really a good thought-provoking short book.

I'm loving this trilogy. It's so nice to find a new fresh fantasy author. I hope he hurry's up with the Lightbrringer books.

Will blow your mind.
No, nyt sitten odotellaan. Tämä oli "perinteistä" aikuisten fantasiaa minun makuuni! Sopivasti hauskuutta, traagisuutta, syvällisyyttä ja taikuutta.
