This was my favorite Jodi Picoult book so far. It felt like you were on an emotional roller coaster the whole time! It was deep and i was on the edge of my seat for most of it waiting to see...

A friend told me about this book and my first thought was "she writes? hahaha". But I kept open minded. As a very recent converted vegan, I'm willing to educate myself as much as possible. I liked the organization of the book. She broke it down to digestible (no pun intended) sections of describing the aspects of animals, environment, health, nasty foods, kind foods, and further broke down to implementing these knowledge into flirting, vegan, and macrobiotics. Half of the book is filled with recipes (vegan and macrobiotics). I can't wait to try some of them. The tone of the book is definitely casual, as if she's talking to you as one of her girlfriends. And yes it's geared toward girls/women but I don't see harm in a guy reading this at all. Although casually presented the book was very informative and simply put. I definitely recommend to those who are thinking of becoming vegan and to those who just want to be more aware of what they consume and how it impacts everything including their health.

Since I really liked Case Histories I was eager to read the next book by Kate Atkinson. Guess maybe it was a little too much of a good thing. I did finish it, but not with the eagerness I raced through it's predecessor. Although it also features the same detective, the likeable Jackson Brodie, he gets a bit tiresome by book's end, as do a number of the other characters. The plot seemed forced and uninvolving. A disappointing follow-up to an excellent debut. In an afterword to Case Histories, the author names 2 of her favorite suspense/mystery writers: Harlan Coben and Lee Chlld. So I got one novel by each of them at a used book store... there were lots of them, so evidentally these guys are popular. They were terrible! Written and plotted efficiently, I guess, but who cares. Anyhow, I thought: Why does Atkinson like this stuff? She's 10 times better! Well, maybe she's not.

NOT A FAN!!! I'm not sure what it is about this book that makes it so dreadfully slow, but it just seemed to drag and drag. I enjoyed the magical realism, but the stories were almost painful to get through. I did like how Hoffman incorporated past characters in to each story and built upon them, but this just wasn't good enough to get more than 2 stars from me. Sorry Alice!!

"How dare you imprint on my baby? Have you lost your mind?" - p. 449 "She's taken to immortality with amazing finesse." - p. 584 "Say what you want, I still think Dracula One and Dracula Two are creeptacular." - p. 631 "You look good. Immortality suits you." - p. 696
I LOVED THIS BOOK. Now, if you can't handle a little language and some gritty scenes, don't pick it up. However, for the original writing, the layered characters, the way this book makes you think about life and your human interactions and ... well... for its MESSAGE... it is one of my favorites now. Matt even said it's his new favorite fiction book. REALLY. You should read this and soon!

Japanese magical realism at its finest. Murakami merges the ordinary and the extraordinary so seamlessly that it is often hard to tell one from the other.
Ashes, Ashes is a YA novel by Jo Treggiari from Scholastic Press. Book Blurb: Smallpox epidemics, floods, droughts - for sixteen-year-old Lucy, the end of the world came and went, stealing with it everyone she ever loved. Even the landscape of her beloved New York City is every-shifting and full of hidden dangers. As the weather rages out of control, she survives alone in the wilds of Central Park, hunting and foraging for food and making do with the little she has, while avoiding roving scavengers and thieves. But when an unrelenting pack of vicious hounds begins to hunt her, Lucy is not sure she can continue on her own. Then, suddenly, she is swept to safety by a mysterious boy named Aidan, who helps her escape the hounds and urges her to join a band of survivors. Reluctantly, she finds him after her home is destroyed; however, new dangers await her. My thoughts: At first it was floods, earthquakes and tornadoes. Land masses shifted, coastlines altered - what was once dry land became lost to the oceans. But people adapted. Then the plague arrived and billions of people died - almost wiping out the human race. Lucy is the only member of her family to have survived. Scared and alone Lucy makes her way to Central Park and there she sets up a makeshift camp. Hidden from prying eyes, Lucy hunts and forages for what she needs to survive on a day to day basis. But when the dogs come, Lucy realizes that someone is hunting survivors and she is no longer safe on her own. When her camp is destroyed, Lucy joins Aidan and his group of survivors - but despite the odds, there is no safety in numbers. The Sweepers arrive, and when they leave - they take several people with them. But they really want Lucy. Ashes, Ashes is an enjoyable read - and I’d love to read more. I give Ashes, Ashes 4 out of 5 stars. Good escape reading. The chase through Disney World's back lot was fun. This kept my interest throughout.
