As a kid George was my favorite Beatle and likely seem to still be. I enjoyed this book and its great to go back a reference.

This is a good little thriller that won't change your life, but it will keep you turning pages.

Let's just say that this is the book that re-kindled my passion for fairy tales.

Creationists, holocaust deniers, alien abductees, psychic mediums. It's very easy to mock weird beliefs but why do people believe in such things, given the lack of any sort of evidence? More pertinently why do otherwise smart, well educated people believe in weird things? This book presents a study of different areas of pseudo science and examines how each belief gains credence through a feedback loop of self reinforcement. One particularly interesting chapter looks at how the objectivist philosophy of Ayn Rand - surely the last word in coldly rational self interest - turned into a self destructive personality cult in defiance of all logic. Shermer explains the principles of scientific and sceptical thought, with the important point that scepticism is a method not a position. Another important chapter deals with the confirmation bias - the tendency to look for evidence that supports an existing belief and to ignore anything that contradicts it - which is why the scientific process of peer review and evaluation is so important in rooting out bad science. I would recommend this book as an excellent introduction to sceptical and critical thinking.

Well, first up, this has been the easiest read of any web book I've ever tackled. I *zoomed* through it. And the information is really interesting. Yes, quite a bit of it is common sense; yes, there's some repetition, but I think it's an excellent introduction to how people behave online. It's a book that would be useful not only for people developing social networks, but people attempting to achieve anything online. It's also - apparently contrary to the title - not just for designers. The design that's being talked about covers every aspect of a site's design - from the initial idea and approach, through system design, form design and graphic design, and I would recommend it to anyone who is working with websites, or thinking of starting up a web project. Excellent examples, easy to read, not too long, plus a wealth of links for further reading.

A good book that became a great book by the time I finished it. Even if you haven't read any Hemingway before (I haven't) you'll like this book. Smooth writing and a good story. Hadley's a very traditional female figure, in that she gives herself over completely to supporting her husband's ambition, without really having any ambition of her own. Normally this trait in a heroine annoys me, but I liked Hadley.

Reading this book, one would think the only successful lawyers are ones who graduated from a top 20 school and practice at a large multi-national firm. Geared toward students who have been gunning for the Ivy League since pre-school.

Ordinarily, I have no problem with tall, sad-eyed, green-skinned (from subcutaneous chlorophyll) priests who communicate instantly across the galaxy by means of the WorldTree. But when combined with characters I'd rather slap a few times than read about, arrogant aliens giving humanity a lesson for being so precocious (with the tacit approval of the author) and poor, stilted narrative, they become unbearable. Go away, you green-skinned freaks!! I don't want to hear about benevolent old King Frederick of the Terran Hanseatic League and all his foibles!! I don't want to hear about the Klikiss torch that turns has giants into suns!! Out, specter of poor science fiction!! I expel thee in the name of Orson Scott Card!!

This is one of those seven or so books that I keep loaning out to people because I think they just have to read them--and never get the books back. I have bought four copies of Watchmen since I first read it for a Graphic Novels class. I remember being completely astonished by the plot when I first read it, but the thing that keeps me coming back to it is the way all the stories, all the details and side plots, are brought together by the end and unified.
