This was a terrible book. I don't know how the author ever found a publisher willing to print it.

I once tried reading the Tale of Genjii, but never quite made it, so when i found this book at the library i was keen to give it a try. I was not disappointed and thought it was a wonderful biography that now has me keen to try reading 'The Tale of Genji' again. Liz Dalby has genuine feeling for Lady Murasaki and i learned as much about Japanese court as i did about the writer herself. I'll be trying 'tale of genji' again thanks to this book.

Though I love Jeeves and Wooster, I realized pretty quickly that this whodunit in the P.G. Wodehouse style was not for me. It felt too forced and the actual plot outlandish, but not in an amusing way. Just not my cuppa.
Shadow of the Wind is a big, darkening, blustery, damp book. It's got a speedy plot, a haunted atmosphere (postwar Spain, if I remember right), terrible, terrible secrets, and super-haunted characters. If you press on this book, all the hate, love, rage, angst, sex, longing, smoke, and fluid come pouring out. So don't do that. The book gets a little too caught up in its own dream for my tastes by the end, but a girl as lustrous and unattainable as some of the ones in this book once told me she loved it, so what do I know?

Another good story about Horatio Lyle and friends. The original one is still my favorite though.

Full of great recipes for both the regular home cook and the professional. There are recipes for starters and bread doughs that the average home baker would probably not spend the time as they lean more towards someone who is in the baking field. But the cake recipes further into the book are suitable for any level and sound delicious. One of my favourite bakeries in Sydney - it is great to know how all their gorgeous treats are made.

Great book, great stories. Engaging vignettes that capture the early 20th century really well.
Many of my friends told me this was their favorite Narnia book, but I didn't like it quite as well as some of the other books. Edmund and Lucy, with their cousin Eustace, are drawn into a painting, straight into the Narnian sea. They're picked up by a ship containing Caspian and Reepicheep (my favorite), along with some new characters. The group is sailing across the sea to discover the fates of the seven sailors who had been friends of Caspian's father but exiled by his uncle. So they set sail and have a bunch of adventures on a bunch of islands, but it's not really a cohesive story. On one island they find a pool with mysterious properties. On another island Eustace gets turned into a dragon. And so on. It was enjoyable, but it just didn't grab me the way some of the other Narnia books have.
