A brutal but honest depiction of a much overlooked moment and history-- the plight of German women during the Russian conquest of Berlin in 1945. Virtually every women was raped by several Germans while struggling to avoid starving to death. Ultimately the women prove stronger than their male conquerors who weary from war give in to carnal impulses, the shame of which they douse with all the alcohol in Berlin This is a unanimous diary that portrays the moment with an empathy gaining verisimilitude.

Not as funny as I thought it would be, but I really enjoyed the story. I hope the rest of the Xanth books hold up.

I recently had the pleasure of previewing an advanced copy of Darkness My Old Friend by Lisa Unger (Crown 2011). This is the first novel from Ms. Unger I have read and will not be my last. Ms. Unger has characters galore throughout the novel but cleverly weaves them together for a very exciting, although somewhat predictable ending. If one is looking for good beach reading material this will certainly qualify. The story begins with a mother (this character is also an author of some renown) and her daughter moving from New York city to The Hollows, a small community (the author includes nice insights into the mother-daughter relationship. If you have a daughter, you might like these). This move is driven by mom's attempt to provide a more "normal" surrounding for her teenage daughter to grow up in. The daughter witnesses a man digging in the forest for no apparent reason, and the mystery and drama is on. Enter Jones Cooper a retired cop who is currently acting as handyman and general all purpose good guy for the neighbors. A local psychic gets involved predicting terrible visions involving Mr. Cooper and a victim yet to be clearly identified. You'll have to read the book to see how these two plot elements intertwine with the daughter's experience. The dialogue is excellent, intricately plotted and credible. I can easily see why Ms. Unger has such a enthusiastic following among mystery lovers. My only criticism is that the story construction overall bleeds into the line that separates mystery from literary fiction. There is a bit more discussion of emotions than I usually like in a mystery novel. This, though, is a preference likely unique to me and shouldn't interfere with anyone else's enjoyment of the book. In fact, you may find it more appealing for those types of scenes.

These quirky, short stories drew me in quickly. I enjoyed getting to know Bloom's interesting characters which were poignantly portrayed. Last one, "The Story", was a bit confusing.

I decided with the Sept 11th anniversary this week, now was the time to pick up this book. It's fiction, but obviously based in fact and was food for thought without making me cry like a 9/11 episode of Dateline would. (Honestly, I did shed a tear or two, but managed to keep it together.) It's another book that manages to incorporate humour into a tragedy and the main character is interesting. I docked it one star for a slightly confusing back story involving the grandparents that ran parallel and sort of frustrated me. Definitely worth the time to read though. and I'm sure I'll see the movie when it comes out this fall.

Author Gregory MacGuire has a whole series of books that fold reality into fairy tale, and this is the one that works the best. It's a Cinderella story set in a Netherlands of centuries past which, if you found a dusty old copy, might make you believe this is really where the fairy tale came from. Equally interesting is MacGuire's complex spin on the two "ugly stepsisters."

A wonderful tale of sharing what is most important -- ourselves.

Rich and engaging coming of age story set at the turn of the 20th century.
I wanted to like this book more than I did. The Vietnam War as experienced by photojournalists made for a very interesting story. I would not really call this a romance although Helen was involved in romantic relationships - it was more about how people were affected by the war. Insights into Vietnamese culture, how the locals viewed the war and not knowing who to trust were intriguing, but could have been more well-developed. Overall, however, it was an interesting story and a good first novel.
