I almost never give 5-star reviews unless I personally know the author or truly love the book. This book made me fall in love not only with Voltaire, but also with this time period. This is such an amusing read and even almost 250 years after it was written, it's still as entertaining as it probably was the first day it was published. Voltaire is a gem and one of the reasons I love philosophy passionately.
more of a wrap-up of all his life's work, sagan touches on everything. he lets science take a back seat to his views throughout most of the book, and endorses the ever-earth-conscious masses to rise up and save this goddamn planet...and the universe, a feat that doesn't seem so impossible while reading sagan's simplified messages.

I can see why people like this book, but the vocabulary is too unfamiliar for me to be able to read the book easily. It always felt like work. Finally I stopped half-way through and moved onto some reading that seemed more fun.

It WAS slow.
loved! i want to take time to travel as she did, or have some of the same sort of experiences - her year abroad in the "I" countries sounds incredible. her writing style is great; i really connected with the story and her journey. i also identified with a lot of her spiritual struggles, so that made the read all the more valuable to me - i think it will inform some of my own spiritual journey in the upcoming months/years. i laughed, i cried, i will read it again :)
** spoiler alert ** The Good: The whole other realm that Goodman created is wonderful, but also confusing too, At first I figured it was set in China or somewhere in Asia, but as the story moves on, it's all new and created. She indeed borrowed ideas from the Asian culture, but other than that, it's so surreal but yet real. The characters in this book were amazing, Goodman is not afraid to be mean to her characters that's for sure. In every chapter there was always some major disaster that happened to Eona, her whole life seems to be a disaster other than the fact that she is the Dragoneye. There is a one strong theme I get form this book, never give up and women are just as equal as men. in this novel they are majorly oppressed against women, people with physical disabilities. The Plot is uniquely driven but! The rest I'll leave in the bad. The voice of Eona is so real so tangible, I feel as if she is sitting right there next to me telling me a story, that is a good/bad thing I suppose, lol. The Bad: The Plot, wow, it was brilliant, but! Okay ... well it's very predictable. Almost everything was predictable, eve the foreshadowing. Don;t get me wrong it's not necessarily a bad thing (When I write I like to make things predictable, but then like switch it at the last moment). There was only a few unpredictable moments, but I have to admit the main one (When Eona and Ido are fighting the monsoon), makes up for the others, but barely. The Random: This book was amazing, I heart it officially. It reminded me of the books I used to read when in middle school, a whole complete new different magical world. Can't wait for the sequel!
