This book marks the reemergence of my unhealthy obsession with Virginia Woolf. I've read many Woolf bios, and so far this is the most thorough and intriguing. It organizes her life by her works---a refreshing switch from the too-common inclination to view every moment as either “lesbian," "feminist," or “crazy”---and it uses each work as a lens through which to view her social connections, her love life, the critical response to her work, her writing processes, and, yes, her mental illness. A cautionary note: this is very dense sometimes impossible material if you haven't read the books (or if you're like me and still don't "get" JACOB'S ROOM).

Not particularly fantastic, but I give the writer credit for choosing the unusual setting of Yemen. Good book for those intereted in Yemen.

This book is AWFUL. I could not live with myself if someone else started reading this after reading this review. It is poorly written and even more poorly edited. I hope the "editor" of this book is enjoying his or her second career, which should be one far away from books, words, or reading. The grammatical and stylistic errors are so pervasive it is distracting. Examples: to (or for, or with) my mother and I (this is repeated throughout); it finally "donned" on me (repeated at least twice); forgetting the pseudonym chosen for the insurance person at the clinic (mostly she is Marta, but at least twice so far she's been Norma, once she was Marta and Norma in the same paragraph!), a lack of understanding of the difference between literally and figuratively; "franticly"... Perhaps the craziest thing came during what could have been a real point, that the only condition besides obesity which apparently is "acceptable" by the public to make fun of is dwarfism (no one makes fun of cancer, or diabetes, or other conditions, but somehow these two are fair game for mockery...). But then she ruins any credibility she may have had left by referring to the psychologist doing her pre-surgical consult as a "Keebler elf" and saying she wanted to pick him up by his tiny waist. Didn't anyone read this before it got published??? I almost never stop reading a book before finishing, so I will see this through to the end. But all I can do is wonder how she will top the Keebler elf. ** OK, I'm done, and thank goodness. If only it were possible to give a negative number of stars.

I love this book. 1979, New York City, mystery, friendship, compasion, heroics, and the $20,000.00 Pyramid Game Show...what's not to love? I must admit, a big part of why I love this book is the skill of the writer in crafting the novel. It's just perfect. I can see it. But I'm not sure kids will get that. Do they need to? Well, I'm not sure that there is enough else in the book for them to appreciate. Even with all it's references to A Wrinkle in Time, I'm not sure it's a sure sell to fans of Madeleine L'Engle's classic. I think at best most will say "it was okay." It's almost as if you have to have experienced life to appreciate all that this book has to offer. So, perhaps we need to employ a little time travel: propel kids forward, let them read it as adults, then come back to now and tell us what they think.
I love Shirley MacLaine books! It's like checking in with an old friend - an old friend with a very glamous life! a quick but enjoyable read.

It's written quite well, and Helen Keller is presented realistically and accurately. At times it gets a little gory, but it passes swiftly. Did I say it's written quite well? It's really written extremely well. Annie's narration is very believable and obviously Sarah Miller has done her homework - there are no inaccuracies anywhere, in period detail or anything. And she's obviously read the book written by Helen Keller and all of her letters to and from Annie Sullivan in later life. She is a very gifted writer. I'd recommend this book to anyone above, say, seven years old.
