Kind of fictiony, but a page-turner.

This was an audio play rather than an audio book. The different format I didn't expect but definitely enjoyed as a change of pace. I will definitely look for more books like this. The voice acting was done well, and I definitely got a sense of the character of the 8th Doctor (Paul McGann), which was nice considering it was a relatively short story (about an hour's length?). That said, the story itself I found to be only okay. I think that it being so short didn't allow for a more interesting story to develop. Worth listening to, but not the highest on my list.
"A fast read and an original story about what it really might be like to run off to the circus." - Kathleen Sullivan
So far it is really interesting. Why does Kyle...I mean Adrian have to be such a jerk? Why is it that in the book Linda is a redhead? I really don't get it why they would change some parts of the book in the movie. After reading this I am in the mood of planting trees, but it is winter right now so I'm not even gonna try. Hopefully Adrian learns to appreciate everything and everyone and look into inner beauty and not outer.
I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would when I found it for $1 in the used book store of a public library. It was a little slow to get started, but picked up as the characters developed. The title seems appropriate as in many ways all of the characters were like Little Children, each rather self-centered and trying to find themselves. The "Prom King" stay-at-home Dad, the disillusioned feminist whose 3-year-old daughter seems to be in the way, the "pervert" sexual predator who has moved into the neighborhood, along with adjunct characters such as spouses, mothers and friends, are all intertwined and each seeking gratification they don't seem to know how to find. What they think will bring fulfillment is destined to fail. The nature of each person determines what they are able to do or not to do. In the end, each character lives up to who he/she is. In many ways the book is a parody on our open society. At times I found myself smiling at the ridiculous scenes being described. I would say this is the type of book that would make a good "summer read," on the beach or otherwise on vacation.
Some good humor here! The scene where the actual Hissy Fit is thrown starts the book off with an bang (really, I'm not kidding) - and this is a hissy fit for the ages. It's a Scarlett O'Hara style hissy fit with throwing things and breaking them and confronting the Miscreant with his transgressions right in front of a country club full of friends and family. Once the Fit has been thrown this settled down to the aftermath of a spectacularly broken engagement and an improbable romance with a rich man with way more money than sense.

I can't read this book without getting all choked up. But I'm a sucker for sentimentality and that's cool. My favorite thing about Polacco's stories is that they are largely true, based on her family history and her life. My favorite thing about her artwork in this book is the photographs. Look closely. The drawings are colored pencil, possibly with some watercolor (?), but all the photographs on fireplace mantles and walls are real. She scanned family photos and put them in her book. I love that.

The book is great BUT Rubin, Gayle's chapter "The Traffic in Women: Notes on the ‘Political Economy’ of Sex" is worth the whole book ...
Loved it! I can't wait for the second book to come out.

I'm certainly glad I read this. The section where Frankie, the "radio gal", was riding trains in France and Germany interviewing Jewish refugees hoping to escape the Nazis was extraordinary, as were descriptions of the London blitz It was a good read at first - fine writing, interesting characters, but gradually it lost it's pace and I found the ending disappointing.
