I really enjoyed this book. It did some similiarities to previous book Ive read but overall a well put together plot. Certainly going to read the next soon. I am a little confused but hoping that this gets sort out with my further reading. Clare and Simon are brought into an invisible world with demons, vamps, and Nephilims. She must rescue her mother she thought she knew and ends up finding out more than she thought about herself and everyone around her. Great book would recommend it to anyone. :)

A good entry into this somewhat violent series. This series is a little more violent than I like my PI series to be, but I like the characters. Kristin Van Dijk is now a PI with a license to carry, and her role as pool shark (hence the name Baby Shark) plays no part in this novel--this is straight noir-PI all the way. I like Kristin, her partner Otis, and the way they work together. This started and ended with a will with strict guidelines and kidnappings, with a lot of shoot-outs and gunfire in between. And lots of dead bad guys :) -- they even kept count--at least 10 at one point, but the toll may have risen by the end. And speaking of the end, there's a terrific twist! This got a rating of 3 stars from me only because of how much violence there was--a little less shooting, and a little more plot would have raised the rating. I will definitely continue reading this series.

The plot is scary in it's ability to be a real possibility in the future, but takes on a mystical element later on that takes away from the fear you feel in the beginning. But overall a good, solid story that allows you to really get to know the characters. Also, lacking in the ending and wicked loooooong.
the film was nothing like the book - the film made Bridget more neurotic and paranoid. In the book, there really is someone trying to steal Mark Darcy away! And there is of course the wonderful interview of Colin Firth by Bridget - classic.

I was very disappointed by this book - The plot was very clever, but it actually wound up raising more questions than it answered - Perhaps it'll be a series. The book reads like it might be. Our heroine this time is the grim reaper. Not "A" grim reaper, but the only one around. She spends most of her time convincing dead spirits to pass towards the light (herself) -- it's really only the interesting ones who tend to hand around. One of her apartment's tenants is a Mr. Wong, who, dressed in grey, faces the corner of the wall, and simply hovers above the floor. Jones never manages to answer any questions about him, although I personally thought he was the most interesting character in the entire book. I'd give this attempt at a debut novel a miss, if I had the choice.

Second best book in the series. I've already read it again. There are a lot of threads left hanging on the suspense side and I look forward to the new books in the series.

Creative and filled with fantasy, Ironside is one of my favorite books. Written by Holly Black, Ironside is the perfect sequel to Tithe. The plot was awesome, suspenseful, and fantastical. The characters were so intense, and I loved Roiben and Kaye. The language is exactly how teenagers speak, and I appreciate that about it. Ironside is an awesome faery book, and I loved reading it. Holly Black is a natural at writing. Ironside has an awesome plot. The plot was filled with action and many fight scenes, and I love a good sword fight. The characters worked well together and they seemed real, even with wings. The fantastical elements that take place in Ironside are amazing. Two love torn faeries, a jealous queen, and angry knights. The list of characters goes on. Kaye and Roiben cannot be together unless Kaye finds a faery that can lie. This is a problem because it is physically impossible for a faery to lie. She goes on a journey so she can be with the one she loves. But the queen of the faery court wants Roiben, so Kaye has to face her army of angsty knights. There is already so many conflicting characters. What I cannot grasp is how people do not like Holly Black because she curses too much in her books. This is how most teenagers talk, so this makes complete sense. I totally agree that this book is written realistically because I see so much in common with how Kaye speaks and how I speak. Holly Black is incredible in linguistics. Holly Black is an incredible author. She really hit the mark with Ironside. I read this book three different times because I loved it that much. The language, the characters, and the plot all blend in perfectly creating one of the greatest fantasy stories.

I read a lot ABOUT this book before reading it. I wasn't going to read it, but a friend asked me to so we could talk about it. I liked it a lot more than I anticipated. There has been so much furor about the author's parenting style, but it was more humble than I thought it would be. She is more poking fun at herself than telling others this is how you should raise your children. I also think the book had a lot of exaggeration in it to add to the humorous elements. I mean, come on, the author is a Yale Law School professor, is jetting around the world to give talks, and writes academic books. There is no way she has the time to berate her children all day as depicted in the book, even assuming that most household work is done by hired help. Some of her criticisms of "Western" parenting have some truth, such as our de-emphasis on rote learning (which is why our children don't master things as well) and that we give up to easily on boring tasks. Sometimes you need to deal with the boring before you can move on to the more interesting levels. I didn't see much of her parenting philosophy as being the special sphere of Chinese. I see many parents in hyper-educated, privileged enclaves behaving as she does. There is so much emphasis on creating the "perfect" child rather than the empathetic child, the caring child or the concerned with the larger community child.
