Very well written True crime book that tied together the World's Fair of 1893 and a serial killer.

Ahhhhhhh, fantasy. It's like comfort food. . .only I'm reading it instead of eating it. This was just what I needed. Thanks, Denver.

If I can recommend any Russian history book..this is the one you should read. My Dad read it and loved it too. You will be amazed and won't be able to put it down.
I liked parts of it, but was never fully engaged by either the characters or the story. I had the same problem with the other Alexander novel I've read, The Arkadians, which I picked up for the Trina Schart Hyman illustrations, of course. My favorite story by him so far is The Fortune Tellers (illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman!).

Great read. Entertaining to the last page. A little rock history, pop culture, metaphorical references that seemed to be calling my name... and every guy I know!

I read this in one sitting, more or less, not long after seeing the movie. I was pretty tired I think, and probably didn't absorb its full brilliance, hence the lack of five stars. That interspersed pirate comic was pretty creepy. I'm sure it would make a good topic for an english paper... but again I was way too tired to consciously understand the parallels with the story proper. Anyone care to explain?

Of the four books, I thought this was the weakest, which is a shame since it's also the last book. I had a hard time paying attention for the first half of the book - nothing "caught" me early on. Still, it was nice to see the Septembers one last time.

I love Bill Bryson. I had been warned that this book was "controversial" and that, as an Australian, you either loved it or hated it. Well, I loved it. The humour, Bryson even sounds like one of us. A hilarious tongue in cheek romp through some of the furtherest corners beyond the black stump.
The amazing story of a woman who found an abandoned child and decided to keep and raise her for her own. Before you start yawning, let me say that there is some very hard subject matter in this book. The mother took the child, yes, and raised her. But what you find out is how she struggled with that choice and why. Then, when the real parents of the child return to claim her, the mother has to make a deal harder than any most people could imagine. I liked this book fairly well, but it was depressing.

It's one of my most favorite books ever. I could go on about it but I def wouldn't want to give away the best parts!
