It's sexist, and the writing is bad, but I absolutely love this book. I've read it 20 times or more, and will read it again. I like the computer becoming conscious, I like the revolution, I like the group marriage. (Of course it's homophobia that all the women are married to all the men and not to each other, ditto with the men.)

Could you forgive someone who put you in prison for 11 years for a crime you did not commit? This book shows how the justice system is not perfect. It also demonstrates how forgiveness enables one to move forward in life. I thought this book was powerful.

This was hard to put down. Like some of the other reviewers, I strongly believe in a person's right to choose. But the choices made affected many other lives and resulted in a preventable death. I felt deeply for the author who as a young lady had to struggle with the decision to honor her parents wishes or reach out for help. My sister-in-law was rasied Christian Scientist and fifty years later is very conflicted about her childhood and upbringing.

What vivid depictions of India's city life! What tragedy... one of the best books that year.

This had got to be one of my all time favorite books. I have read it multiple times. It is about a girl who was adopted into a rich family. She feels different from them. At night when she can't sleep, she goes downstairs and looks at the painting of the daughter the family lost. Very good mystery book.

truly one of my most favorite books. when i think about it, i get a certain feeling almost like it's part of my own experiences or memories...
McCullers' multi-vantaged novel was her first, published at 23. It's hard to see that in the richly-developed plot and painfully human characters. Unorthodox even today, unusual, and unique, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter speaks to the need in all of us to find something or someone to belong to.

"Laughter through tears" is the best way to describe Gogol's writing. Dead Souls was quite a humorous description of mankind. The hero, Tchitchikov, had many failings and some virtues, and his experiences with different landowners brought to life all kind of personalities. I really like the writing style of this book. There wasn't a whole lot of plot, it just revolved around a central character and his series of encounters with Russian landowners. It did drag a little at the end of Part I, but picked up again. In Part II there were a lot of missing pieces of manuscript, which made the story hard to follow. There were also a lot of new characters introduced during that time, causing additional confusion. There was no real resolution at the end, but the book achieved its goal of depicting human nature.

"I thought you could read your book out loud until I fall asleep," she says. I don't think she could bear a tragic love story right now. "It isn't very good," I say. pg.345 That about sums up Sever for me. I think Lauren would have created a brilliant book if she kept it to one rather than three.

Great book insight to Mumbai life. Dark in many places as well as thought provocing in terms of moral issues.
