I watched the movie first, and then picked up the books. The first hundred pages was pretty tough, but I persevered and at the end of this book, I obviously thought it was worthwhile to read the 2nd book (can't remember what, but the naval battle scenes and O'Brian's wonderful sense of humour might have been it.) The 2nd book was even harder to go through because it was probably the thickest book in the series and the first 1/3 was spend on land. For me, it started to get really good in the 4th book, after which I read the books zealously and went through the entire series in the space of 3 months. (I also watched the movie a couple times more because it did get better when you've known the characters well and could appreciate the authenticity Peter Weir strove for.) I consider this series to be the authoritative voice in the naval historical fiction genre that when I moved on to the Hornblower series by C. S. Forester, I thought it wasn't very authentic at all and a less richer tale! Whoever said Forester is a lot like O'Brian or vice versa probably did not understand O'Brian at all.

A book about the Nuwaubian cult of Dwight York (check Wikipedia if you're curious). It's a fascinating story that I've been following for years -- since before York was exposed to be a mass molester of children (he's doing throw-away-the-key time in a supermax today). The author is a reporter who covered the Nuwaubian beat around their Egyptian-themed "Tama Re" outpost during its last years, and he adds some details to the story -- particularly concerning the behind-the-scenes government infighting and incompetence that allowed York to get away with his crimes for so many years. The book could have used an editor. There are lots of typos, the layout is clumsy, and the writing is unpolished. Interesting story though.

Although I have just finished this book, I`m not exactly sure what to say about it. I was a bit skeptical about reading this book, as I read `Good Omens`, which was a collaboration with Terry Pratchett. Although this book was okay, it wasn`t as overwhelming as so people made out it to be in my opinion. I also read the first volume of Gaiman`s `Sandman`graphic novels, which was okay as well, but I felt had to be read with subsequent volumes to really appreciate it. And so I decided to give this novel a go, as it would be my first `real`Neil Gaiman book. I`ve heard so much good reviews about this particular book that I thought that it wouldn`t meet my expectations. Upon reading it though, I think it did. At the start of the story we meet a man called Shadow, who is being released from prison after a few years sentence. He runs into a man called `Wednesday`who offers him a job, which he eventually takes. He soon discovers that his employer is more than meets the eye. He discovers that Wednesday is a mythological god who came to America with one of the first settlers to come to America. They go upon a journey where they meet other mythological gods (although now almost forgotten ones). Wednesday uses Shadow to try & help recruit other gods, so that they can stand up against newer gods in battle. Ìt`s a strange kind of story, but one I must admit I liked. It`s one of those books in my opinion that you`ll either like/dislike. If you like fantasy books, or are interested in mythological stories, then this might be the story for you. If you don`t fall into that category then stay clear of this one. But I think all-in-all, readers will like this book.

I had already checked this one out of the library before I read the reviews on goodreads. If I had read them first I would not have check it out! But it was a good read - not great but good. Really I would give it 2 1/2 stars. It dealt with an interesting period of American history but reading the book summary probably is enough ...
