Go Swimming. There are certain books that make me into S-L-O-W Man. Stories that I don't want to end: Unbearable Lightness of Being. The Shipping News. The Wind Up Bird Chronicle. I don my goggles, stick my head in a bucket of amber and suspend time- trying to read as slowly as humanly possible. Add Swimming to this sticky note. Ms. Keegan does a great job drawing the reader into her pool, letting us swim, and sink, with her heroine, Philomena, a.k.a. Pip. Readers will need to keep up with the acerbic, irreverent, F-Bomb laden prose as Keegan guides us through Pip's metreoric rise and subsequent fall through the worlds of swimming and life. It is a fast and furiously entertaining read. At times it was like trying to eat ice cream in the July heat-never sure where it was going next but certain it was going to be good. Very good. Keegan's ending, if not as quick as the rest of the book, delivers a stupendous kick. One that serves to remind us that life is not tidy. Life is not neat. Not everything is readily resolved. That sometimes we just have to glide through it.

Good book, same simplicity parenting mind set but was very redundant, especially while reading 'Simplicity Parenting' (which is better written and to the point). Did offer good practical tips tho.
"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again." Phenomenal. I really haven't read a book that has drawn me in like this in a long time, Rebecca truly is a page turner full of suspense and mystery. I was cautious about this book for years as it is often compared to Jane Eyre, my favourite novel and I never believed anything could do justice to it. Even though there are elements of Jane Eyre in this novel (a young girl falling in love with an older, more experienced male with a "wife") I found the one element this missed was love/romance. I didn't believe that the narrator and Maxim were in love ever, it wasn't convincing to me at any point whilst reading the novel which is why I find the comparison to Jane Eyre falls short. I loved how the central focus of this novel was always Rebecca, so much so that the narrator was so irrelevant to her that she was never even named! I regret not reading this book sooner and am definitely going to be telling everyone I know to read this asap.

This was an AMAZING book and I just could not put it down. It follows two stories for the first half of the book - Sarah Starzynski, a young Jewish girl living in Paris in 1942 and Julia Jarmond, an American woman living in Paris with her French husband and daughter in 2002. Their two stories begin to intertwine when Julia begins to research the Vel' d'Hiv', a Jewish roundup that took place in Paris on July 16, 1942. The more Julia learns about this horrific event the more compelled she is to find out what happened to Sarah after that fateful day. An amazing book that explores a hidden part of France's history during WWII. I would highly recommend this one!
The sad thing about working in a lab of twenty-somethings is that we have far too much time to dwell on the inner thoughts that only plague nerds. We speak of quarks and God, light and politics, and above all, the impending zombie apocolypse. we all own copies of the Zombie survival guide, and we all know that it's just a matter of time before it happens. In truth, too many hours have been spent organizing battle stations, deconstructing the weak points, and determining which of us would be best served as zombie fodder to ensure the survival of everyone else. I've mentioned that we're MASSIVE geeks, right?
