"Is this the face that launched a thousand ships, and burnt the topless towers of illium?"... need I say more?

When you can't put a book down, it must have something to it. I don't often read YA fiction, but I'm on a post-apocalyptic kick, so I thought I'd check it out and wasn't disappointed. Yes, there could have been a little more character development (I didn't really care whether anyone lived or died), and the protagonist was annoying at times (especially since it's first person). However, when you consider the kind of life Mary has led and the massive breakdown in what little life that was, it makes her irrational goals and decisions a little more understandable. Sure, there are some story lines left dangling, but this isn't a genre known for its answers, and the next two books answer some. Read my full review at: http://thebookreturn.wordpress.com/20...

This was leaked in (of all the news media outlets) the New York Review of Books, when they reviewed the document for their April 2009 issue. This is the confidential 2007 report by the ICRC outlining the treatment of detainees at the hands of the CIA. It is well worth reading the whole thing, and Mark Danner's review is also very good. Can we get some investigation, accountability, and justice on this finally? I mean good for the New York Review of Books, but WHY THE FUCK are they the ones who had to bring this to light.

Loved, loved, loved the first book, Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes, and liked this one alot but it did not give me the warm, fuzzy feeling that I was hoping for. Ginny is off on yet another adventure, as the 13 envelopes have been found. However, the dastardly Oliver is holding them for ransom. Seems a bit far-fetched; why didn't Ginny alert her uncle or the authorities about the situation? But I did enjoy the story, with the romance, the excitement, the nostalgia for Aunt Peg, and the hilarity of driving that beater car through wintery weather in several countries.
Possibly my favorite book ever.
great chapters on da vinci, machiavelli & the medici's

I have a love/hate relationship with Hemingway... I hate his misogyny and most of his politics. But I love the way he writes!

While the tranlation leaves alot to be desired, the story is very engrossing, and compelling for lovers of history.
