Secara pribadi, saya lebih suka versi layar lebarnya.

The British never well and truly recovered from the embarrassment that was Kim Philby it seems. It was Philby and a few others who dealt the most severe blows to British intelligence during the era of the Cold War. What makes the espionage thrillers of this era interesting is the impeding sense of danger in the horizon and the fact that there are always eyes and ears open & listening to what you do and say. I like Fredrick Forsyth's take on intelligence agencies, there isn't a lot of gung-ho material but moves as subtle as a game of amateur chess. Without giving too much details away, the plot is about the intelligence agencies of Britain and the USSR playing against each other. As cliches would have it, the stakes here are surprisingly higher. The main protagonist is more or less very much a ideal one : highly intelligent and sharp, observant and best of all creative enough to connect the dots. This makes up an ideal investigator and without much of flaws, this was the only piece of ideal character that I did not fully agree with in the tale. My personal favorite is the head of MI6 in the tale : Sir Nigel Irvine. The chic and urbane spymaster kept me interested throughout the scope of the tale and had surprises even until the last page. Overall it's a good read for even though you can anticipate the outcome, the plot line with its twists and turns will keep you interested. Give it a shot if you are into Cold War spy fiction, you will not be disappointed !

I liked it- the relationship and life learning curve of a boy to a man with lots of learning curves, I did like "the painted veil" better. I did not know that the used book I was reading was a condensed version, that was condensed by the author.

sad, disturbing, funny... some weird jumps, but maybe to be expected with an effed up situation like this.

An excellent Primer to Northrop Frye's ideas. But his mastery of Rhetoric makes me wonder at how smoothly he leads the reader into some fairly heretical ideas. All in all I'm with him though, much more s than with Marshal McLuhan.

This has to be my favorit of all the tomes in this series. I am amazed at the complexity of the games, the intracacies of the deception, and the lengths that each character grows into. I am very pleased with the outcome and would not be disappointed if this were in fact the very last leg in Mac's journey. I love how Adam was pulled in (just as a consultant) and found the petty fighting between the MacKeltars, the Sidh-seers, the Fae, and Barron's men quite reminiscent of my children fighting over a tv show... or toy. Very enchanting. Overall, I LOVE this book.

The grim and grisly events are emotionally balanced by the book's dark humor and Bird's vulnerability. This is a highly intelligent and exciting novel, with almost enough action and story for two books. gripping the tale draws in an eclectic mix of characters...and the reader will find himself almost holding his breath in anticipation as Parker dances near to a solution

this is probably my favorite book. i've read it far too many times, but i still enjoy it. The story is set in England(the author is British)and you just get pulled into it. what's so amazing is how polly (the main character) has this dull everyday existence yet suddenly something triggers her memory and she realizes that it was all a fake and her real life was exciting and adventerous. The true brilliance of Diana Wynne Jones is how she manages to write stories about all the secret hope and dreams one has as a child, dreams of other worlds and magic and musician friends who send you books and treat you like an adult. She also writes so naturally about all the fantastic things that occur in her books that it seems real, which is especially true in this novel, the magic isn't obtuse; and the whole thing is very mysterious and somewhat creepy.
