Being dropped into the middle of someone's story is sometimes more interesting than reading a series in order. I hadn't read the first in this group though I probably will now that my curiousity has been aroused. This is a good read. The only quibble I have with May is his rather lengthy invoolvement in whatever setting he involves his characters and that he obviously gives leading questions to an otherwise quite intelligent leading lady. A forensic pathologist working in China with a Chinese policeman (her former lover) uncovers a large and significant conspiracy and meanwhile we get to learn about the Terra Cotta Warriors.
I love the series, but this book was just "ok",as many pointed out, it feels rushed, and disconnected. It was rather disappointing after waiting so patiently for it to come out, and after the OMG moment of the last book, and the authors promises to have faith in her and trust where she was going with the story. Just kinda "eh" .

I read this while in high school (probably when I was 15), and the stars I gave it are purely an emotional reaction to my memory of that book. I didn't like it because it disturbed and almost frightened me. I could not identify with the angry women in the story and their oppressive male counterparts, except as I'd seen such people depicted in other media. I can't speak to the craft of the novel, since I was too young/uninformed to take that context with me while I read it. That said, it has clearly stuck with me for years, since a casual comment by a co-worker just brought it to mind.

For a book that I picked up and abandoned for almost a year, I should have known better. Glad I gave it a second shot. De Niro's Game is a raw, naked and unapologetically honest description of what happens to people in times of civil war, which is worse than military war, being so unorganised and misdirected as it seems. The book is set during the Lebanese Civil War in 1982 and more specifically during what is called the Siege of Beirut. Though we read about and watch news on civil war situations even today, the way Rawi Hage writes about it, you can almost taste, smell and see what life becomes when war happens right outside your home. There is an impatient edginess in the two main characters of the book - one frantic to find a way to leave and the other to stay and do his part in the war for his people. It is a tale of anger, desperation, loss and the unfairness of war that not only takes away food and water, but also people and the simple life from those who end up being collateral damage. One can sense the dazed states of mind everyone in Beirut is existing under - the extent to which they are willing to go to win the war and find an end to it and the miserable ways in which they are failing to cope.

This was an interesting look at escaping from the work/city world into the country. But, there really is a limit to introspection. Enough about the yoga, new-age guru, and ponytailed therapist already! Geez, I was hoping the end would be a realization that they were part of the problem, but alas, no.

This is just fun. Wilkie Collins, Dorothy Sayers, and Agathie Christie are the only ones that operate on A.C. Doyle's level.

This is a great follow on book to Michael Pollan's "The Omnivore's Dilemma." While Pollan discusses the role of meat in our diet, Bittman takes the conversation a little further and writes about American's obsession with meat and how reducing consumption will help us loose weight, be healthier, and help save the planet. His story is engaging because he welcomes us into his personal story. He does not preach but gives great advice and suggestions. And the recipes are on par with his wonderful, "How to Cook Everything." This is not a vegetarian guide to eating - meat can be a responsible part of our diets. Bittman just helps explain how the simple choice of what we eat can change the world.

Being relatively new to the detective/ mystery genre, I am discovering a few authors I really enjoy (and plenty I do not!) This book made me want to read the original Sherlock Holmes, which I never have. Many images and scenes remain in my consciousness after reading this novel, which, to me, speaks of a good book.
