Interesting look at how you can apply simple economic principles to different situations in life--and make out like a bandit in the process!

This wasn't my favorite Discworld novel. It seemed to run in too many different directions.

This is a very enjoyable, quick read that also touches on some serious topics, namely the occupation of Guernsey by the Germans during World War II. The light-hearted tone and predictable story line are at times at odds with its more serious elements. So much so that it can be distracting. I bought it for my mom - thinking that it wasn't something that I would like, but she bought me a copy and said I had to read it. I'm glad I did. Perfect for a rainy afternoon while getting over an illness.

Finishing this book concludes my quest to read in quick succession a book by each of the Bronte sisters. This personal challenge started with the Jane Eyre (Charlotte) challenge. I read Wuthering Heights (Emily) and then moved to The Tenant of Wildfeld Hall (Anne). I chose Wildfeld because it is the more acclaimed of Anne’s work. I remember several years ago starting Agnes Gray and not finishing it. I liked very much the male narrator at the beginning of Wildfeld but it took me just a little bit to understand that it was a man. I thought Anne did a decent job of writing in that role and when she switched to the voice of Helen Graham and the detail bogged me down just a bit. I know that such verbosity was actually entertainment in the time in which it was written, yet I was afraid to skip forward in case I would miss some small twist that the plot would hang upon. In pushing forward, I was glad when the voice reverted back to Gilbert Markham. While I’m not as well-versed in many of these 19th century romantic novels, the ending of Wildfeld is much like the modern romantic movies where the protagonist runs to the chapel, (or the plane or the church or the bus) to declare his love for the other before she marries the wrong person. I don’t know if this is ever been adapted for screen but this will be a great one as Markham trudges through the winter mud and snow for miles to declare his love before Helen marries the wrong man. This book is definitely the happily ever after with the smart, bright and talent young woman/mother and for the young, kind bachelor. The introduction to this novel states that this was a controversial novel of the time, mainly because of the forward thinking and self-determination of Helen Graham. The gravity of the controversy is lost of audiences today because the modern woman is even more forward thinking than Helen Graham. She is one of the modern woman’s role models and certainly inspirational for overcoming the patriarchal and societal conventions of the day. I’m not sure that I will chose to read another of Anne Bronte’s novels. I will most certainly read more from Charlotte. I’m thankful that there are not others of Emily’s to read.
Sometimes you read a book that you know you should love. This was one of them for me. I took it down from the shelf and started reading it, well-knowing that this is one of the greatest works of modern lit. The problem is that I just didn't feel it. I could never quite get into the intense atmosphere of the jungle, or the near insanity of the main character. I understood these emotions, yes, but never truly felt them. I guess this book just isn't for me. Impressive use of the English language though - especially when Conrad only learned it in a later age.

Should have been a masterpiece but something didn't work. Still, recommended.

You don't have to like Buffy to enjoy this.
The Chestnut King completes the 100 Cupboards series as Henry York, in a gesture worthy of an adult male, receives and gives away a crown, defeats an evil witch, and reunites with his family. As we move through the story, the family home has become a tourist attraction, and Henry is listed as an abducted child. He fights to be what he wants to be - a friend, a family, and a welcome guest in any kingdom he visits. I at first disliked all the Faerie - but this book redeems most of them, even as it wraps a closure to the evil that is Endor. A great read, and recommended for all.
