Books like this can tend to be trite and/or idealistic without practicality. Bain deals with the topic complexly and fleshes out how effective teachers build an environment rather than just a set of best practices. I've shifted in my thinking about teaching. It's something that I've always considered I needed to keep fresh with... work on new strategies, new activities, talk with other instructors, keep up with my own research and reading on the topics I'm teaching... but Bain's research helps me think deliberately about how I'm approaching the course, the students, my own role in new ways. It's like marriage counseling for a teacher... how to maintain that right respect and positive attitude and energetic love for our topics and our students and learning in general. It may well sound idealistic without the practical in the way I'm stating it here, but there is meat to the book...the interviews, research about assessment (student and teacher), and analysis of these work well to support his case. And, there is a liberation in the way Bain stresses that good teaching isn't dependent on doing "the right" things (i.e., discussion vs. lecture, exams vs. essays, etc.), but is instead in the focus on learning. It sounds simple.

From the first page to the final page this book was absolutely amazing. In it were many things I've never seen in a work of this kind before. The Vyrl, in my opinion, were a masterwork. A must read for fantasy lovers.

The setting for this story is during World War I in London, England. The heroine is Bess Crawford, a battlefield nurse. During one of the coldest winters London has seen in a very long time, Bess encounters an emotional lady with a black eye on her doorstep. By nature, Bess cannot turn her away. But , litttle does Bess know about the trouble she was inviting into her life. By befriending this lady, Bess' life became very complicated. This one good deed takes Bess to a remote, spooky town where she gets tangled up in several murders. Lydia, the lady that Bess had helped has a wealthy husband named Roger. Lydia and Roger live in a huge house with his family. It turns out that the black eye Lydia has, came from her wealthy husband and the reason she was on Bess' door step is because she was running from him. Lydia convinces Bess to go back home with her because she thinks if she tells Roger that she was with a friend, that maybe Roger will not be as angry as if she had just ran away from him. So, Bess ends up with this complicated family in a spooky town, in a scary house. It becomes even more scary when a family friend is murdered near the house and Bess and Roger's Mother finds the dead man. The family is already trying to get over the loss of two family members, so this death adds to their grief. When it seems they are beginning to accept the death of the family friend, there is another death. This time it is the family Doctor and he is found on their property. Bess is caught up in this families problems and even becomes a suspect in the murders. To clear herself and find the murderer, Bess has to go to France. All of this is happening at the same time that the War is raging. In France, a beautiful orphan child is rescued from a fire by one of Bess' patients. This child becomes a very important part of the murder mystery. This is a wonerful mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. I had no idea who the bad guy was until the end, which is the way a good mystery shoud be. visit my review at http://booktalkswithcharla.blogspot.com

Tolkien is just a genious with creating a history/mythology/story in a completely fabricated world.

This book is a coming of age story that simply enthralls readers much in the same way as L.M. Montgomery's timeless works, but in a far more adult and sophisticated way. I would recommend this to everyone over the ages of 14. There is a woman who was raped in it, although not at all graphically-- the woman tells Christy about it years later, and it honestly deals with the fear that the main character has around some, er..., less savory men, and it may be a bit too much for someone under that age. This book has to be the most wholesome, yet entrancing and uplifting, pieces of fiction I have ever read. Of course, the author based it heavily on the experiences of her mother, but it was very clear that it is not the exact experiences. I highly recommend it to anyone (whether or not they ask).

My wife mentioned that she thought this book had a stupid title. She said that "Killshot" was redundant-- akin to calling the novel "Shootgun" or "Stabknife." I disagreed with her reasoning, explaining that there are many different types of shots (warning shots, missed shots, kill shots, etcetera), but agree now that the book is poorly titled. The whole conceit of "one shot, one kill" has character purpose in this story, but not much plot or thematic purpose. With that said, I'm not convinced this novel is executed very well. The characters are fascinating (especially the villains) and the dialogue is sublime. However, I don't think that the main thread is plausible. There's no conceivable way that The Bird would let Richie be so gosh-darned inept without breaking ties with him. Worse, I think The Bird would have put his one shot, one kill maxim to good use about two days into their partnership. With that said, it's a fast, enjoyable read. And it's nice to see a female character that doesn't need a man to resolve her affairs.

I love the relationships in this book. I also love the way Dallas describes her different quilts in this book. I love that it is a historical fiction/murder mystery!

A truly beautifully written coming to age story in 17th century Iran. Reading this was like watching a rose unfold. Over and over Azraeel makes rash decisions that severely affect her standing as a woman. She uses what she has to make for herself a life she feels comfortable with. What is amazing is that women now have almost an equal opportunity to create a life that is enjoyable and still we struggle. A refreshing lesson in learning what you want and working with everything you have to get that.
