First impression is: wow, what an odd book! And it really is. Written from the point of view of a female Utahraptor, Raptor Red, it follows her journey as she recovers from the loss of her mate; aided by her sister, her sister's three chicks, and an unknown (but striking) male Utahraptor, who's hoping to become Raptor Red's new consort, she struggles to fulfill her duty as a female raptor - namely, to reproduce and carry on the legacy of her species. While full of geek talk and bathed in that wonderfully humid and wild atmosphere of the Early Cretaceous (much like Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park (and since I'm a big Crichton fan, that's high praise indeed)), it's still very silly at parts, because holy anthropomorphism, Batman! But then again I can't quite think of any other way to write a dinosaur point of view and still keep the reader engaged in the story. Because it is an engaging story, and the dinosaurs' plights and characteristics are memorable and interesting; Raptor Red's sister is headstrong and prone to hysterics (which can lead to quite funny situations, at times), the chicks are annoying teenage brats (nothing new there), the male Utahraptor is quite likable (adorable, even), and Raptor Red herself is strangely endearing (I was definitely rooting for her, which is more than can be said of certain human heroines). I really enjoyed the book, if for nothing else than that it let me feel again a mere sliver of the magic I experience back when I first discovered and read Jurassic Park .
