Amazing amazing read. One of the best books I've read last year... probably not such a great literary work, but a great story and great characters. I would club it alongiwth Upamanyu Chatterjee's English August, which is also one of my hot favs!

A year ago, I thought it might be a good idea to buy and read Macaulay Culkin's new book Junior. That was pretty much the stupidest idea I've ever had. It's basically a meaningless miscellany of all too self-conscious stream of consciousness ramblings intended to paint our hero (affectionately calling himself "Junior") as some sort of creative, emotive force of modern writing. He comes off more as a crappy emo rock band that opens for a crappier emo rock band at your local Starbucks. Just because you're random doesn't mean your work has "layers of meaning." Just because you start every stupid list with "Dad" doesn't mean your relationship with him is somehow worth writing a book about. This book reminded me of the journal I had at the end of high school when I was deluded enough to think that someone would find it after I died and feel inspired to publish it. Every entry was painfully oozing with the effort to sound profound and artistic. Reading this book made me embarassed for Macaulay. I imagine he'll look back on it and cringe if he ever grows up.

A book group book. When our daughter was at Hunter's Lane a guidance counselor decided she had skipped class, although teachers of the classes told the guidance counselor she was there. As punishment for skipping (although she hadn't) she was assigned to make a report on The Prince. I am so thankful not to have to do this. Mine eyes read the words and mine fingers turned the pages but there was no connect with the text.

In case you couldn't tell, I have been enamored of her of late. She didn't let me down with this one. Although I didn't like this one as well as Second Glance or My Sister's Keeper, I liked it better than The Tenth Circle. This is the story of Delia, a search and rescue worker from New Hampshire. Delia has been having flashes of memories that she can't account to her life; she keeps remembering planting a lemon tree, but she has always lived in the inhospitable north. Suddenly, her father is arrested and the memories come streaming back. She is not who she thinks she is. Delia and her family travel to Arizona where her father will stand trial and she discovers her past. A fast and enjoyable read.

This is a collection of essays by the great Joan Didion. I say "great" having only read this book, with the full knowledge that she wrote a lot of other stuff. But this book was great, and the rest of her work, if "The White Album" is any indication, must also be great. She delves into a number of topics surrounding her life and the parts of it in the Golden State of California (also a little in Hawaii). The essays, though sometimes disjointed by time periods and far from forming a continuous narrative, do serve as something of an autobiography taken as a whole. She travels from her days as a young writer hanging out with the Doors through parts of her marriage that most writers would dread even thinking about (what gets us is not the tempest, but the doldrums) to the convoluted traffic and water systems of L.A. to the weird definition of normalcy carved out of the former Governor Ronald Reagan's estate. If I could write like Joan Didion, I wouldn't be writing on goodreads.com. Or I would, but under the surname "Joan Didion." But I can't. If you want to get through some tough times, you can read this book to fill your mind with absence and loss. In a good way. It's like the dharma of clinical depression: observational, slightly detached, elegant, and placid. One of the characters in Richard Linklater's film "Waking Life" put it pretty well, "Yes, emptiness. But such a fullness of emptiness."

Disclaimer: I'd give the *movie* four enthusiastic stars, and I saw it on antidepressants. But the story is much less complex and compelling, and the moment of, erm, entry is one of the most clinical descriptions of coitus ever rendered. I should admit that I'm not really an Annie Proulx fan. When I read *The Shipping News,* I was not yet twenty and easily seduced by lush language and depressing characters. But a re-read several years later left me disappointed, annoyed, and worried about prose in general (including or especially my own).

Cute story, I liked the flashbacks to growing up in the 80's - it reminded me so much of my times back then. The ending was a little disappointing but nonetheless, it was a pretty good read.
