This was a good historical fiction novel. I would give it a 3.7. It gives you an interesting perspective on how you view folks who have "conditions" that are not well understood.

I really loved this book. There were aspects that mirrored my own and my sisters' 1960s third-generation Armenian-American suburban lives so closely I wondered if Edgarian had been hiding in the closet of my (shared) bedroom. I own two copies of this in hardbound: one to lend out and one to cherish. I drove 2 hours to see/hear Edgarian read from the novel at a chain bookstore in Portland, OR. She seemed a little distant from the roomful of Armenians but then a book tour can really wipe you out. Here's hoping we can look forward to many more novels by Carol Edgarian. I can't wait to read her new one, The Three Stages of Amazement, releasing in just a few days.

This is the catalogue from an excellent show that just went down today at the Japan Society-featuring portraits from the 13th-16th century in medeival japan. The catalogue chronicles the ways in which chan/zen buddhism used its dharma lineage as the sole focus of almost all socio cultural history throughout the ages and the ways in which painting reflects this special bond between master and student in Zen. It gives excellent insight into Zen's many layers and provides a gorgeous interpretation of what Zen is, which is a fresh departure from the ahistorical coffee table books on Zen that seem to flourish spouting the Zen of you name it. It was a great show, and its also a great read if you missed the show. Interesting to compare the historical works depicting Bodhidharma/Daruma with the newer contemporary works of Daruma done by Takeshi Murakami recently. Breathtaking.

excellent read was a true story of survival of the human spirit. Not something that i would normally like i.e. wwII type but found it to be amazing and learned alot about the Japanese POW camps.

I've read all of Phillippa Gregory's books. It's not my favorite. Gregory tells a compelling tale that's not always escapist fun. The story she tells is given a very life-like tone.
We read this as a class when I was in high school & at that time I HATED to read. The teacher I had did a remarkable job... she went through that book & made it come alive. I will never forget that experience or her name: Mrs Starrett.

I've had this book on my TBR for some time and I finally picked it up this weekend to bring on a camping trip with me. It was a great "beach" read. It kept me entertained, had me laughing in parts and I Wesley may have made me a touch swoony at times, when he wasn't being an ass. ;) Overall I thought it made for a great summer read.
