My Nicaraguan friend, Memo, lent me his copy and I'm reading The Hobbit more slowly this time around and paying more attention to the details.

This one is more of a prequel, telling us a story of Henry the 8th's first love, his love of Katherine of Aragon and the theory of a lie that changed history. Awesome!

HILARIOUS as are all his books.

written mid 1980s, Postman's well established arguments for why he thinks television is instrumental in the United States' process of intellectual atrophy. Never naive, Postman speaks with conviction from a position of concern. He doesn't cram his arguments down your throat, but leads gently, with sparing humor, never failing to make the gravity of the situation known.

This novel was so gripping. I didn't want to quit reading the first night, but I forced myself. The second night, I stayed awake too late because I had to find out how it ended. Terrorists raid a party in a South American country, thinking they will kidnap the president and be gone. Because the president is actually not in attendance, they spend too long searching the house for him, and the police trap them inside with the hostages. The relationships that develop among the hostages and between the terrorists and hostages are so interesting. There is some foreshadowing of how the situation will turn out, but there is still a twist at the end that, although not earth shattering, still surprised me.

Ahhh, the instruction manual for anal retentives. I loved this book. It's a great reality check. Unfortunately, for the truly compulsive such as myself, it's one we have to keep on our shelves and regularly re-read or else we start, you know, sweating again.

Very imaginative, fantasyish--but low key fantasy. Made me move right on to book 2 in the trilogy. A tale involving friendships and family and growing up.

1st paragraph of book: "Affluence breeds impatience and impatience undermines well-being. This is the core of my argument. For detail and evidence, go directly to the chapters; for implications, to the conclusion, which also has chapter summaries."
Usually I think Penn is funny. This book is terrible, and he doesn't even use the right definition of atheist for christ's sake.
The cover of this book (and title) caught my eye while I was doing zone maintenance at B&N. Set in rural France during the Occupation, the book explored situations that test values that would not ordinarily be questioned. I like books set in the wartime experience.
