This was a very quick read (read in about 30 minutes), but it packed an emotional punch. The book was entirely made up of short notes posted on the refrigerator between Claire and her mother. Claire is an active 15 year old girl, busy with normal teen activities, and her mom is an obstetrician who spends a lot of time at work. These notes are the main way they communicate as they don't see each other very often. I was frustrated and saddened how little time they got to spend together, and how much Claire had to do for herself. When her mother is diagnosed with breast cancer, it is even more frustrating, because we know that they need each other more than ever. This was a very unique book, and it was very effective at addressing the mother/daughter relationship and presents an unusual way of glimpsing into their every day lives. Kuipers did a good job of expressing emotions into even the shortest notes. I enjoyed this book, and would definitely recommend it.

English General Charles Ferguson has come across some startling information. He comes into the possession of an audio tape that contains conversation from a battle in Afghanistan, the battle killed 12 U.S. Rangers and a British Medical Team. Most of the conversation was in Arabic; however, some of the conversation was in English. There was one person, the commander of the operation, that had an Irish accent and used the codename "Shamrock". The English put together a team to find out who this person is and bring him to justice. The are also concerned that the Taliban is recruiting supporters for their cause from British born Muslims. The team consists of Major Giles Roper, who because of battle injuries is confined to a wheelchair, but is a whiz with computers. He will gather information and the track the operation from his London home. Daniel Holly, who is a successful businessman, has many Middle Eastern connections. He was sentenced to the Russian Lubyanka Prison and was only released because he could provide needed information of Vladimir Putin. Sean Dillon, who is probably the consummate mercenary, intelligence officer, and secret agent, is the backbone of the group. Sean was a former IRA soldier and missionary, that is now working for the British. In an attempt to flush "Shamrock" out, they have set themselves up as targets, and "Shamrock" is more than happy to oblige them. "The Judas Gate" is an excellent read that contains well crafted intrigue and mystery, with plenty of action and suspense. The ending will catch you off guard and leave you wondering if a sequel is in the making - I certainly hope so.

Well, I quite liked this. I think it was well-structured, entertaining, and much better than some reviews I've seen...BUT...the version I had gave the entire denouement away on the back cover! Shame, really, as it really undermined the book.

This book helped me see the absolute beauty in mathematics, and made me yearn to be able to live in Erdös's mind for just a day. To have met the man must have been astounding.

I loved Me Talk Pretty One Day and Naked, but this book shows that Sedaris can do more than just essays. I don't care for his animal fables, but the fiction half of this book is really great. And of course the Santaland Diaries are a riot.

great book
Perhaps you will be more familiar with England's Failed Revolution of 1381 if I call it by a name that is more familiar to we American school-goers, Watt Tyler's Rebellion. In The Peasant's Revolt, Dunn touches on a topic that is mostly glossed over in American History courses. He discusses the causes for and touches on the consequences of a near overthrow of the English governmental system. As the feudal system struggles to maintain a foothold in an England that is ever approaching an industrialized economy, citizens from all walks of life took to the streets and country roads in an attempt to sieze back what they felt belonged to them since the Doomsday Book had been first recorded. Dunn makes it clear that this revolution went far beyond the scope of a rebellion that could be pinned down as belonging to one man, such as Watt Tyler. His clear description of multiple uprisings over a broad geographical area all occuring at the same time makes plain the case for this near successful revolution. Dunn contends that it was this lack of a unified effort and disjointed goals that caused the grater revolution that might have been to fail. Truly a good read for anyone interested in finding out more about a topic that give insight into the collective personality of the nation of England.

This is lesser Trollope, with a fairly standard plot: The lovers seem ill-suited, but are they? And will those who, for various reasons, want to prevent the marriage prevail? Trollope's treatment of Rachel's older sister, in thrall to the evangelical movement, lets him display his dislike for that movement, but he does that better, and with much more humor, in Barchester Towers.

Not gonna lie... i'm kind of addicted to this comic book series, in which all human and animal males die, and the world is taken over by women. Only one man and his monkey survive. The movie "Children of Men" handles this topic much better, and with more finesse, since this series quickly dissolves into a male fantasy - but it's not bad.
