The whole second "uplift" series by Brin, and especially this book, showcases both the inspiration and disappointment of sci fi. The imagination here is staggering -- he's actually created a whole Galactic sociology that kind of makes sense, a technically realistic way the universe could be full of life that all talks and interacts. I've read this book time and again for its scope -- hydrogen breathers, "transcendent" beings diving into black holes, etc. But the way it's written is a big disappointment. Too many things that seem to be important plot points are described only in summary retrospect on in fragmentary views, and the sheer number of points of view tends to break the narrative (rather than providing a "kaleidoscope" of perspectives as I imagine was the goal). Brin wrote much better, in terms of both characterization and linear narrative, in The Uplift War and Startide Rising. But those are set on planets. If you want to fly around in space this is the one. .

Read this years ago. Didn't surprise me they'd make a movie but after killing Alan Moore's "Extraordinary League" movie with Sean Connery, Hollywood had to make amends and let the book speak for itself.

These are great fun and better than I expected them to be.

While the writing itself is not pure poetry, it does the job in telling a very strange mosaic of a very strange childhood. I was introduced to this book through the recent movie. After watching the movie for 10 minutes, I deciede it was too boring to waste my time with, and I turned it off. The book however, is much more accessable and humerous and vulgar. Not life changing, but entertaining and worth your time. You will feel very vanilla and NORMAL after reading about the upbringing of Augusten Burrows.

Dreams, drugs, and somewhere in there is life. What reality are we in?

Joan Jacobs Brumberg discovered the story of ‘Kansas Charley’ Miller while researching juvenile male violence in the aftermath of the 1998 Jonesboro massacre. It’s clear why she found Miller fascinating: “killer kids” are presumed to be a modern phenomenon, yet in September 1890 this fifteen-year-old orphan and drifter murdered two sleeping youths in a boxcar. His trial in Cheyenne, Wyoming, aroused nationwide interest, and when he was pronounced guilty, many questioned the justice of hanging a teenaged boy. Suffragists, business leaders, and politicians campaigned to have his sentence commuted, but Miller was executed almost two years later, at the age of seventeen. Brumberg has done a masterful job in reconstructing Charley’s life. Using public records, she describes the loss of his parents to illness and suicide, his chaotic relationships with temporary guardians, and his life as a ‘boy tramp’. She also presents a convincing argument that Amos Barber, Wyoming’s acting governor, shied from commuting Miller’s death sentence because rampant violence among cattlemen in the state demanded that he appear to be tough on crime. Barber’s conscience was probably assuaged by the fact that Charley Miller was not a repentant or sympathetic defendant. Some reviewers have chided Brumberg for injecting too much sentiment into Kansas Charley: the Story of the 19th Century Boy Murderer. I didn’t detect any. I did find that Brumberg tries to explain the conditions that turned a boy into a murderer, but to me that’s elucidation, not sentiment. The author does not excuse the double homicide that sent Miller to the gallows. Nor does she whitewash his other misdeeds, such as stealing from benefactors, breaking out of jail, and having the gall to demand that a prostitute visit him in the death cell. It’s plain that the boy was grossly self-centred, with a sense of entitlement that cost him a lot of public sympathy. My only complaint- and it’s a mild one- is that there’s an undercurrent of idealism in Brumberg’s views on children and their accountability when it comes to violent crimes. She opposes the juvenile death penalty, which makes the book read like an opinion piece in parts. But this did not detract from its value as an entertaining and thought-provoking addition to the study of kids who kill.

The Giant Jam Sandwich is a book I read when i was a child. I remember loving how the townspeople got together and saved the whole town from the swarm of bees. I think this book promotes community because it shows students that they can should come together to reach a commom goal, especially if the goal will benefit everyone.

Based on the classic French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast tells the story of Belle: an intelligent young woman scorned by her townspeople for being a bookworm, weary of fighting off the advances of the arrogant Gaston, and dreaming of escape.
Review from 2011: I was looking forward to reading this book because I enjoyed the 1995 movie so much, but upon reading came to find that a major plot point involving Sara's father had been changed, making the ending much different. As it often goes with books that are also movies I enjoyed the story I first heard, which in my case was the film. I thought the plot changes in the film lead to a better story, one with more suspense. A decent book overall though, and one I would love curling up and reading with a daughter or niece someday.
