Just getting started. So far so good, laying the ground work of characters. Need a lighter read right now! Okay finished this book and while I liked it the middle got long. Am really anxious to hear what book club says. Hope all my friends will be there!

Another good Davenport book. I was speeding along to the end and I liked it, but... I'm not sure I like how a character was built up one way and was shown in a completely different way by the end. Just didn't seem very consistent.

A period drama that started slow with all the characters introduced and scene established, Mr Twain has created an entertaining detective story. The court room theatrics with a surprise ending was classic. Perhaps "Perry Mason" was not the first to make "lawyering" an interesting profession. I enjoyed the story well enough, but the dialogue that Twain presented was era specific and very entertaining. I actually got used to the generous use of the "N" word to refer to the negro slaves because it was as it was back then. This was a good read but I ask. "Why did I not hear of this story before?".

To me, this book is the eastern equivalent of Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea. Yes, the language is simple, and yes, there are several repetitious phrases. Despite those potential drawbacks, however, I find the book enchangting.

DFW is funny, cynical, and original. I enjoyed many of the essays in the book as they presented a fresh point of view and funny microcosms that I would have otherwise not known about (the porn industry, the political campaign reporters, the talk radio world). DFW also explores deeply the aspects of the topics he's writing about, without becoming overly polemical or boring. My only criticism of the work was that some of the essays were geared towards very specific audiences (not me) and the footnotes could become distracting.

The Poisoner's Handbook Penguin Group(USA) Inc, 2010, 375pp.,$25.95 Deborah Blum ISBN 978-1-59420-243-8 “In the early twentieth century industrial innovation flooded the United States with wealth of modern poisons, creating new opportunities for clever poisoners and new challenges for the country's early forensic detectives.” The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Blum is a non-fiction book which takes place around the Prohibition era in New York City, a time period also known as the jazz age. The book is told through the eyes of the chief medical examiner, Dr. Gettler. He was the first forensic scientist in the United States. Each chapter in the Poisoner's Handbook is about a different poison and a different murder in New York City. The book covers different poisons, from arsenic to carbon monoxide. The Poisoner's Handbook was interesting because Deborah Blum was able to mix chemistry, history and murder mystery all in one chapter. It could get a little confusing at times because of all the chemistry involved. There's some language, but its not too bad. This book was a fascinating read, because of all the poisons that were used. It's scary how many just every day products like bug spray, rat poison and even balding cream contained poisonous chemicals. I would recommend The Poisoner's Handbook to someone who enjoys history, science or murder mystery books. It is geared toward 8th grade and up. Even though The book involves murder, it's not very heavy in terms of violence. Although this book is non-fiction, it almost reads like a fiction novel-you just want to keep turning the page.
