I've been on a mission lately to read the books that have been on my goodreads to-read list the longest. Luxe was the second book I added to my list, back in April 2009, and to be honest, if I had read it back then, I probably would have loved it. There is Elizabeth, who is heart-wrenchingly in love with the boy she can never be with, unless she leaves behind her family and the only life she's ever known. She seems like the perfect girl, but she's really hiding a wild secret. Diana is young, only 16, but she's fallen in love at first sight with her sister's fiancée. Said fiancée, Henry, is a ladies man, but agrees to marry Elizabeth because his father has demanded it. Then, of course, he meets Diana and falls in love with her, and changes instantly from a man who plays with women's hearts to a serious, loving one. Penelope is the main villain in this piece, but to be honest, her main problem is an extreme case if self-centeredness and self-importance, followed by rage and the need for vengeance. I can't blame her for being mad at Henry - he did sleep with her multiple times, then toss her aside - but does she need to take that out on Elizabeth, her "best friend"? And Penelope still wants to marry Henry, after all he's done? Then you have the servants: sweet, perfect Will, who loves Elizabeth, and wants her to run away with him to California, but leaves without her rather than hang around and see her marry some other guy. Petty, angry Lina who is in love with Will and hates Elizabeth for growing up rich and falling in love with Will, too. Clueless, gentle Claire, who doesn't even seem to really have a personality. So, what is it that I don't like about this book now, 4 years after adding it to my list? Everything is a little too simple, and at the same time, too overdramatic. Elizabeth has to fake her own death to escape her impending marriage. Penelope seems to think if she blackmails Elizabeth into not marrying Henry, he will fall into her lap. Diana and Henry's passionate yet "pure" relationship. Lina's upper class ambitions. Obviously class separation and family status was extremely different back in 1899, and so it's hard at times to really see the direness of their situations. I can say, by the end if the book, I was hoping there would be a way for Elizabeth and Will to be together, and for Diana and Henry, and I even had a vague desire to read the rest of this series. Luckily, I talked myself out if that by reading the ridiculous book descriptions for the next 3 books. No thank you! I will remember this one as a pleasantly benign read, and move on. Farewell, poor little rich kids.
