What an amazing and awe-inspiring woman! Getrude Bell was the mother of modern Iraq, and this is an important book to read to help understand the make-up and the long-standing issues that have been part of Iraq since before it was a country. It's completely naive and blind to think that these long-standing problems can be eradicated by imposing Democracy on a country with so many factors pulling it apart.

There were three elements that bugged me about this book: #1: stupid puzzles, clearly the author thought this was inane too. #2: the female lead decides to wear a tube top and miniskirt to go fight monsters. I don't know of anyone with a brain in their head who would want to face horrible, rotting monsters wearing a top that won't stay up and a skirt that doesn't cover anything. This is even stupider than the steampunk corset plus tool belt combo. #3: No one makes any effort to procure clean water, even though they are spending hours running through the city. Those points aside, this book was better than some of the previous ones, and I liked the characters.

I really enjoyed the beginning as well as the GnR coverband. However, it just seemed to go on and on and on. Perhaps I need to leave it for a while and come back to it.

Okay, I really did not want to like this book. I mean, a time-traveling love story? Come on. In fact, I resisted reading it for a long time, but Soowan made me and once again proved that she is always right. I could not put this book down! Sure, it is pretty hokey at times and the style is a little crude, but the damn thing is like heroin! It is totally plot driven and is a very quick and fun read. Thanks, Erica!

This was a fun fast read. Toxites are an interesting invention to explain why kids fall asleep or don't pay attention in school.
As I read through Saul's huge list of books, I decided to pick this one next his 3rd i believe? Not bad although I have definatly read better of his. I find Saul one of the easiest to read of all my fave authors and finish his books pretty quick. In one week i read both this and Suffer The Children. This one's about 2 families who decide to move beach side into the little town of Clark's Harbour. A town which the people who reside there do ok that's if they have lived there for more then 20yrs. The newbies??....Not so good! The villain this time around is the sheriff Harlen Whalen who makes life for these two families...let's just say not the easiest. A good read but not Saul's best.

This series (this is the first book) is a precursor to Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes (approved by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). Interesting...

3 star science thriller (top 50% of the genre). The cold isn't the only thing that can kill you in Antarctica. For my full review of this debut environmental thriller, see ScienceThrillers.com. Dionne's second book, Boiling Point, is even better.
