This book was fascinating from beginning to end. A pediatric doctor treats homeless kids from a mobile van, bringing the reader face to face with a lifestyle (both his and theirs) that 99% of us have never experienced. Didn't leave me with a "happily ever after" thought process at the end, as I now know more of these poor kids than I have before - but did leave me with a want to treasure my own little ones even more, and teach them to be even more aware of the needs of others, to find ways to help them. Well worth reading.

A great hiking book for those who don't hike that much. I had always wanted to hike the AT and had done a few sections in Georgia. H nailed the AT in Georgia in this book, so I was interested in seeing how the other states fared.

This was an amazing story. I love the charecters. It is really a good way to find who you really are. "If you want to have sweet dreams, You've got to live a sweet life." Loyd, Animal Dreams

Yaccarino traces the history of his great-grandfather's immigration to America from Italy and the small shovel that he brought with him. Bright colorful pictures show the different generations and the various uses that the shovel has been put to in its history. Why I started it: It caught my eye as I was checking in books. Why I finished it: Family history for the little ones. Simple, colorful and powerful. Storytime idea: Have the children think of an item or heirloom that has been handed down and have them draw a picture of it.

This book was too discontinuous, and thus I didnt enjoy it as much as I could have. It seemed like the center of the book was good, but the start and end were scattered and discontinuous.

A gift from Deb Baker who knows of my interest in current China reading. This was a nice light quick read filling in some of the blanks of current day China in the central and less developed areas of the country. I enjoyed it very much.
This book must have been written with classroom discussion in mind. There are so many angles to consider, from life choices to film production. It shows a side of life that many teenagers likely have not personally considered. I found it interesting to read this immediately after finishing with Myers' memoir, Bad Boy. There are a lot of parallels between Steve and the teen-aged Walter Dean Myers.
I really enjoyed All the King's Men - once I got into it. Robert Penn Warren's gift of writing exceptionally beautiful phrases and passages, and drawing characters that seem to be alive, they are so faceted, was abundently clear throughout the book. I found myself placing tiny dogears on several pages because there were passages and quotes there that I absolutely wanted to remember, and I went through days when I just couldn't put the book down, I was so engrossed in it. My only complaint was that there were ten chapters in a 438-page book, which meant that chapters lasted almost 50 pages. When I start reading I like to be able to stop at a clear stopping point, and that made it hard to just pick up All the King's Men for ten minutes while I waited for dinner to finish cooking or five minutes while I waited to meet my husband after work. I get a lot of reading done in snatches like that, and my inability to read All the King's Men that way was what caused me to take months to finish it. When you read All the King's Men you do need to focus on it, or so much of the beauty of the language and the emotion expressed by the characters will be lost on you. I finally finished it after putting in several hours on the couch with it, and that was the only way to do it - sinking deep into Jack Burden's world and committing to go along for the ride.

Guy moves to Breton and buys a house. It's okay, but definitely not the best of the genre. It held my interest to a modest degree, but that was all.
