In the last short story of this collection, Munro writes a beatiful passage - about flies. She describes a pile of flies in this way that made the entire collection shine for me.

I finished "The Host" and really liked it. It was a bit predictable but I do like that she ties things up and gives us as good an ending as possible.

Definitely my favorite so far in the series. I found this book to be really funny as well. Just the lack of knowledge the wizard side knows about the muggles cracks me up.

Bought with a gift certificate, I was glad that I stumbled across her work in a Borders. Fans of authors of experimental writing or fans of Eastern European literature would do well to seek her out.

My thoughts: I thought the book had some really interesting and unique aspects to it: a little paranormal, a bit dystopian, mashed together. The main characters were intriguing: Juliette and Warren especially. I was initially (and quite a bit throughout) thrown off by the writing style - the stream-of-consciousness feeling. The strike-throughs, which bothered some, weren't the most difficult for me to deal with, it was the use of odd metaphors and strange turns of phrase that just struck me as off. A few times, this took me completely out of the story and I think that's much of what made me not enjoy it. I was also disappointed in the lack of details on this future world, the Reestablishment, and what was going on. Still, I became invested in what happened to Juliette and Adam and Warren. I may still pick up the sequel. And I have to admit, hearing Tahereh speak at a Dark Days event (recap to come...sometime) I wanted to like it even more. She was really relatable and funny and genuinely happy to be a YA author. I'll be interested to read more from her. Full review at One Librarian's Book Reviews.

This book is a fascinating story of a Chinese family that is swept up in the dynamic political changes taking place in China in the early 20th century. The author was American who lived her life in China and this novel introduced American audiences to Chinese culture beyond the stereotypical caricatures which were widely accepted. It is an enjoyable and enduring classic, especially with the growing relationship between China and the West.

This book was good because Julie had to learn to get through things even though they were really hard and she didn't want to.

I finally finished the series. I've really enjoyed reading these books. I think I would give it a 5 but I'm holding the five stars for when I read a truly amazing and inspiring book. So if I give it a four it's very good. I would recommend this to anyone who likes "Pride and Prejudice" and would like to read a nice story about Darcy. I liked the authors way of writing and the way she portrayed Darcy's character. I'll definitely be reading this series again.
